They were a unified kingdom until the Japanese Empire decided it was a big kid now and invaded Asia. After the Americans fucked their shit up half of it was shared with the USSR, North to the commies, South to the capitalists. The Korean War became a thing and America and Co came in to save the South, but China pissed it's pants with a massive western coalition on it's border so they invaded. The American commander wanted to nuke the Chinese but Congress was scurred so instead the western coalition let the Chinese kick them all the way back to the border you see today. After that the South went through two or three failed republics, one of them was pretty much Dictatorship Lite and the rest were generally pieces of useless shit that never got anything done. Eventually they got it right though and the Southerners went through an economic miracle, with South Korean products existing in pretty much every western home. The North is just a shithole that is such a useless country that they aren't even worth the calories you will burn reading this. That is just off the top of my head though, try googling for details.

They've spent pretty much their entire history being the bitch of a more powerful nation, and each country that dommed them would end up leaving some of their culture behind. So now they basically have the worst aspects of Chinese, Japanese, and American culture in one amalgam of shit. It's really odd how nationalistic such a pathetic nation's people are.

I remember once sawing on TV a documentary about the children in SOuth orea and how they had no free time.
They ended school at 17h but then were placed in study rooms until 20h, afterwards they went to other places where they had teachers helping them study again, up until midnight.
Those corporation are so big that they have giant bus to collect the kids.
So basically south koreans kids have no freedom. No wonder so it's so easy to lose motivation and ending up a neet in that country.

Culturally and politically irrelevant globally until the 2000s when the Hallyu wave was born.

That's why no one teaches anything about Korea in schools.
