Also VVT-i version has stock single turbo. So I suppose single is better if even Toyota decided to ditch the twin setup? I don't really know.
It's a CT16 in VVT 1J Chasers and Crowns.
A single CT16 is no better than twin anything, maybe twin GT12's. The single CT16 was used for low end response and packaging constraints at the sacrifice of air flow. CT16 only moves about 20 pounds/min at a PR of 2 before it turns into a space heater.
I've got a 2J with a HX40W on it, that should count.
I put twelve grand into a blown 355 SBC and transmission that could handle it. I've put about four grand all up into a 2J GE block and head that I got for $800 and I've already overtaken the SBC for power. More street friendly too, and using a lot less than 34L/100K.

I'm doing a 1JZ swap right now.
Paid $1099 for it shipped. Cheapest 2JZ was $2,200 and came with a useless Auto trans.
I'm leaving its internals stock, a few bolt on mods. Billet tensioner, and Tomaei elbow.
2JZ is a meme engine. Its overpriced, and one with a R154 attached goes for over $3,500. I could buy a R154 with a JZ tunnel for $700. But the R154 is also a meme transmission.

Its fine, and it can hold power. R154 is rated for like another 40HP? And its triple the price of a W series. If I want to make real power I will buy a V160 for under $2k, which holds more power bare bone than a built R154 will ever.

I saw a bmw and S15 Silvias with fucking 2JZ-GTE. Of course all those motherfuckers with 1JZ-GTE chasers/soarers/mk3 supras making retarded power on minimal money.

Overpriced to you. Again, got my current block and head for 800 dollarydoos dressed. Blew my 58 with less than 400 at the tyre. Funny that. Blew the replacement. Both times the case had distorted, input shaft became misaligned which destroyed the bearings on that shaft which then seize at speed. The webbing on and in the case is poor and does not stop the case from distorting at high-ish power.
If there was realistic postage to the states I would happily give you the working 58 and both blown 58's for free. Useful as door stops.
R154 rating from Toyboata is only a poofteenth higher but experience shows it can deal with a fair bit higher. Some put 7-800 through a 154, your dreaming if you want a 58 to do the same.
You will not get a 160 or 161 for less than two grand. Maybe the case and bell housing.
