They were GT's not sport's cars. So the variables you mentioned have no real standing as niether car was meant to be driven hard or intended to be sporty.
The thing is The SC400 had a 4 speed and a extrmeely smooth and bulletproof 1uz which actually had torque unlike the six pot. Also the luxury refinements in the sC400 like the two point doors sound insulation and power everything made this car the perfect cruiser just as the engineers intended. Something meant for commuting on the highway in style and dropping your kids off.
The supra on the other hand lacked the v8 power the sc400 had and as a result had to rev the piss out of them to get any power They were heavy but lacked any of the luxery refinement the sc400 had while having none of the benefits giving rise to the question,What is exactly the appeal of this car
the 1uz was detuned from factory. An aggressive tune and a exhaust and headers and you will have a faster car than the supra with torque and drivability to boot

So nip cars were actually made to be owned by normal people while offering similar performance (infinitely better performance if you consider the price). Americans did the same with their ponycars, but they never bothered to export them in large numbers. So "JDM" is like a cool car that you can can actually own. Also in the 90s Japanese cars were just straight up best in the world in any class except highest luxury. They're considered to be reliable too, even though it's just Toyota and Honda that are actually engineered to not break.
