Are "sporty" cars dying?

Why have actual sports cars literally doubled in performance numbers over the last couple decades, while top-trim performance econoboxes have made almost zero improvement?

Cars like the Civic Si, Golf GTI, WRX STI, and Evo have been getting much heavier but only a tiny bit more power, resulting in cars that are literally no faster than they were decades ago. Even modern "hyper-hatches" like the Focus RS and Civic Type-R are slower than a simple Mustang GT.

the technology isn't fading, you're finding that most users and consumers want cars that save more gasoline and have better emissions (because of regulations). There is a threshold of relative power:performance that we already met. Makers now are moving towards this low displacement turbo variants of cars that are great on gas mileage but aren't getting much more power than before. If they just stuck with their same high displacement engines they'd make even more power compounded with the turbo.

speaking of WRX I was looking into this are these worth it in a brand new 2017?

>why is this 4 cylinder civic type-r slower than a fucking mustang with a v8 and some other shit.

these aren't comparable.

Yes, the new FA20 is solid, plus the Sti's 6-speed is in it now.

When I was a kid the Golf GTI used to have 150 hp

it's not the sti 6 speed

well shit I was wrong, but it is a thousand times better than that awful 5-speed they were using.

Emission and safety standards are chocking up performance. Emissions is forcing manufactures to get more creative to obtain the same power while being greener, safety standards are making cars bigger and heavier. On top of that big wigs and bean counters want stupid features tacked on to raise prices.

Mustang GT and Camaros have a lot to play with, they can put in a new v8 or go to irs to simply improve performance. Your evo, sti, GTI maxed out their potential a decade ago.

>Your evo, sti, GTI maxed out their potential a decade ago.
You mean 2 decades ago

>new mk5-7 GTI's still have the same power/weight as mk1's
Where did we go so wrong?

When GTi became a trim option in 1993

>autotrader is full of mk3 and 4 golf "GTis" with 90hp 8v 2.0l engines

Even where the technology isn't a limiting factor for increased performance, the business case to make those cars isn't there like it once was.

People are poorer than they were a generation ago, and performance vehicles (like all vehicles) are also getting more expensive.

Ever-increasing enforcement and traffic leave far fewer opportunities to even enjoy a performance car. Plus, even basic economy cars have improved so dramatically that they're starting to close the gap in terms of what you can safely/sanely do on public streets.

And, worse yet, the emerging generation doesn't give a shit about cars and will prefer self-driving vehicles.

There's plenty "sporty" cars, actual sports car are a dying breed.

Miata and fiata are in production. Used Corvettes grow on trees. Many car journalists have said the pony cars are basically sports cars at this point.

Yea, no shit hot hatches are slower than a GT. The GT is actually fast. Hot hatches are literally for faggots. Oh and by the way, the Si, GTI, WTX and Evo are and always have been shit. They're made for people who can't afford a real sports car.

So how many people have you drove into?

Every bitch car owner I come across.

How do you drive over yourself?

>fag hatch cuck is mad that I own a real car

>real car
>cornering and turning
Pick one.
How does it feel knowing a flat six beats your v8 on a track?

So what year Mustang did you get, user?

>coming from FWD cuck
Go understeer off a cliff.
Clearly you've never driven a new car.

I never said I owned any car user, but you ousted yourself and your shit mobile.
>being this assblasted
typical fordfag

>literally driving old shit
>literally being slower than a new Camry

>Tries to assblast a nicer car than his.
Ok then lets compare modern cars, 911 does 0-60 in 4.0, vs the Shelby that does it in 4.6.
The 1996 911 Turbo does it in 3.6 seconds.
How does it feel to be utter trash?

The Focus RS would demolish a Mustang

jesus this is giving me visions of a remake of Cherry 2000

>there's literally no point of getting a new gen sti when you can get the superior 3rd gen.

Admitting you're a bus rider isn't a good way to fight an insecure mustang fag.

Mustangs are cool, but they're not for you. That's OK.

Did it really do it that quick? That just sounds dangerous as fuck with 90s safety standards. Our is that cherry picked? If they did that routinely that's impressive.

I mean vapers will charge you new price for a 100k+ sti riced to shit, so that's why I'd buy new.

Talk shit all you want about soobs, they hold value amazingly, even beyond rice tax.

/reddit/

It's not cherry picked.

Porsche got away with that kind of stuff, a lot of super car and hyper car manufactures got away with it up until after 2006.
And hey, I just don't like people assuming they know what I drive.

You're comparing a Turbo to a nonturbo.
Look at a current gen turbo's 0-60.
The Carrera has always been a mommobile.

That's one fast mommobile, he was saying that my 911 Turbo (pic was not related) was slower than a camry, So I posted times, I included the modern base 911 to further show that Shelby a shit.
>the current 911 Turbo does 0-60 in 2.6

o.

Lol its based off the same gearbox bit with a 6th gear lol come on dude

hot hatches are much faster than they were 2 decades ago, compare any of them with their 90's equivalent and they have much more power, much better 0-60 and much better lap times. The new Golf even has a better Nurburgring time than most supercars of that era

>everything in my price range is just rusty I-give-up-mobiles with 200k miles, 3 prior smoking owners, and fast food/work boot mud encrusting the carpet
>everything else is either overpriced for what it is, or just plain out of my broke-ass range
>all of these mythical $2-4k cars that supposedly exist are on either coast
Fucking kill me now please.

Dude just look for a Crown Vic and calm the fuck down.

My 2016 wrx has been great. Bought it new and have had no problems. I will say the stock tune isn't the best. I went with a Cobb accessport and it's way better.

That really is incredible! Puts modern numbers into perspective.

The thing you should also be paying attention to is the fuel consumption between then and now.
