I understand how R33 is less suited for mountain racing due to it's size, but how's R34 different? It doesn't really differ from the R33 all that much, it's even fatter.

The R33 had fundamental engineering problems which gave it much more understeer in all situations. I forget the word but I think the engineers placed the components in a way that was bad for the center of gravity.
The r34 however was designed, from a chasis standpoint, to be much more nimble even though it is a larger sport car. The fancy awd computers helped too
