/indie/ - Indie And Misc. Games General

Last Thread: Al Fabet Edition

>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy,Cookie Clicker, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in Veeky Forums), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indies, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

I saw some posts a while back detailing sniper crafting, does anyone have something similar for assault rifles?

But user, there's a skeleton controlling you from the inside.

...

No, my brain has harnessed the skeleton's power and uses it to control the flesh mech it's encased in.

But your brain is in the skeleton, you ARE a skeleton yourself. Your brain is its brain.

I'm the brain, dummy, and I'm controlling the hapless skeleton minion to travel me and my pals around.

So I like the gameplay of stardew valley but it has absolutely no personality and i dont like the art or music much.

since i have literally nothing to do and modding experience, do you think a "personality overhaul" (so to say) mod would be welcome by the community. like tweaking all the dialogue, art, music etc to have more harvest moon type charm than how it currently stands?

>am I in control of me brain or is me brain in control of me

Have you ever played runefactory?

Yeah. I really liked 4. I could never finish Rune Prana though because you had to ridiculously min-max and I couldn't be bothered.

>tfw played and loved 3 many years ago
>try to play 1/2 but it's just a worse version and I can't handle the UI
>just got a n3ds xl and rf4
feels good man

Would you recommend 3 to someone who adored 4 and sunk over 30 hours in just a few days? I've tried to play 1 soooo many times but I simply can't get over the voice acting and the slow start.

Yeah both 1/2 seemed to have a slow start for me, never managed to get into them.
3 is just a slightly less updated 4, it's one of my all time favorites. Good waifus and super comfy game play. For reference I had the same problem as you did with stardew valley. It felt lifeless and a bit on the tedious side rather than comfy. I think you can find an undub for the rune factory games including 3 if you're emulating. My only gripe with 4 so far is you don't get your own house like you did in the other games.

>since i have literally nothing to do and modding experience, do you think a "personality overhaul" (so to say) mod would be welcome by the community. like tweaking all the dialogue, art, music etc to have more harvest moon type charm than how it currently stands?

First off, I have not actually played SV but rather just hear about it a lot. From what I hear is what people like about SV is how closer-to-real-life it is compared to Harvest Moon. What it sounds like though is for some people (like yourself) the game is too close to life and just comes off as stylistically vacant and toneless. I don't think there isn't an appeal to that kind of mod but I don't think it's something many people would want

I felt the same. On the chucklefish forums theres a harvest moon music mod, we have some decent character portrait mods, and a few NPC and animal sprites. The latter two are a hassle because not every artist does every NPC or updated for 1.1 making style clashes.
Dialogue changes have been attempted but never go anywhere. We and the general community would welcome a mod that adds personality to any of these.

Though imo Stardew lacks personality in subtler things that are harder to mod. For example the dog and horse in Harvest Moon to me felt more like family. You could whistle for them to come, could brush them, and if you treat them right they'll win at the races.
The fact that you have to manually brush animals with a dedicated tool instead of just clicking them like in Stardew makes a difference.
The dog/cat in Stardew only feels like clutter. You can put water in its bowl but why bother.

Stardew's animal care is streamlined and the dog whistle wasnt important but these made things less impersonal.

Stardew misses out on ways to be better than HM too. Sure now you only have to give one gift a week, but its still the same generic dialogue each time.

You've sold me on 3. I will definitely give it a try since I've been wanting a new HM type game (hence why I'm going to mod SV).
>I think you can find an undub for the rune factory games including 3 if you're emulating.
Oh, good! I'll see if the voice acting in 3 is as bad as the two and if it is I'll undub it (flashcart)

>What it sounds like though is for some people (like yourself) the game is too close to life and just comes off as stylistically vacant and toneless.
You hit the nail on the head. Specifically, the character personalities and music just made me feel uncomfortable inside. I play the HM type games to escape how depressing life is, so when everyone has problems that hit close to home (old ex, alcoholic parent, depression), it just doesn't resonate well. Plus the character personalities didn't feel lively at all. It all felt very fake and uncanny. As for the music, I didn't find it catchy or desire to hum it like HM music. May be nostalgia but I didn't like generic banjo music.
>I don't think there isn't an appeal to that kind of mod but I don't think it's something many people would want
Understandable. I'll still do it though because it may improve my enjoyment.

there are a bunch of art replacement mods, although about half turn them into anime style.

in terms of dialogue overhauls, I don't know of any notable ones. The only one that's even halfway popular are the cutscene additions for Jas and Vincent.

Making cutscenes apparently isn't too intrusive, by the way.

No idea how easy/hard it would be to change the music.

>closer-to-real-life
closer, yes, but not quite there. In a way, it has a sort of uncanny valley effect where the smaller differences from the real thing make things more uncomfortable than an obviously idealized setting.

(cont)
I agree on every sentiment. My dialogue attempt may never take off but I'm still gonna try. It's very simple at the moment. I think SV is a genuinely good game crippled by lack of personality and is fixable to an extent like you said.

And I never really payed much attention to the subtle ways HM adds personality like whistling for the dog. If I was a more skilled modder, I'd be willing to attempt to add in functionality like that but alas I'm a simple script kiddie.

>although about half turn them into anime style
While I'm not a big fan of anime, I think it's an improvement but they have more personality than the generic Tumblr-esc portraits. Hell, even the earlier development portraits were good and charming.
>Making cutscenes apparently isn't too intrusive, by the way.
Really? I'll look into that.
>No idea how easy/hard it would be to change the music.
There was a mod back when I was active in the scene that added in Undertale music during rainy days to fill the silence. I imagine that replacing music isn't to difficult, and thus sound effects (the fucking text box open sound effect, I swear to god)

hup

Thats funny. I started playing Harvest Moon as a little kid and relatively my life is okay now, my favorite villagers were usually those with sad backstories like Karen. Im not put off by how depressing the characters are and it seems like an even spread of how many characters there are with and without those problems.
I agree the SV villagers dont feel lively though. I guess that's to be expected, its a one man project its too much to program, design gameplay, and have very good writing.

I think it's less of the issues themselves and more of the way they're presented. In HM, you can tell when someone is stuck in a rut but you tell that there will eventually be some kind of positive outcome, even when the story itself is sad. It's a very Japanese way of going about it- the sense of improvement. When I played SV, it all felt very mopey and I didn't feel hopeful but just down in general.
>I guess that's to be expected, its a one man project its too much to program, design gameplay, and have very good writing.
Oh, totally. It's a ton of work and I still think what he managed to do is very good which is why the issues with it are so glaring. It's overall a good game.

Anyone ever manage to make the leaderboards in Vampire of the Sands?

Speaking of Undertale that reminds me of the STORM mod that made the beep boo boo bop when characters speak have a tone to be high or low and be unique for each character. Hope its remade in Farmhand

I can't wait for tomorrow to have one shot released.

Yeah, not a fan of the bubble sound effect. Would rather have beeps.

The Japanese go too far with that, compare World Masterpiece Theatre to the source works

I've never watched World Masterpiece Theatre but I kinda like that staple of the Japanese. In my opinion, it's a refreshing change compared to western media (especially since I don't consume much anime so the trope isn't lost on me yet)

What's the most obscure game you've played, /indie/?

Is it a hidden gem or an atrocity best left unseen?

>fighting crawlers
>become stunned for TWO TURNS out of nowhere when nothing is on the screen
Whats happening

crawler poison stuns you when the duration wears off
bring antidotes

>get quick tinkering feat
>run in corner
>drop bear trap at your feet

Crawlers are the easiest enemy in underrail because of this.

Cloud. It was too much for my computer at the time so I cant say either way.
But it wasnt that obscure because it was a finalist at Slamdance Indie games 2006.
Hard to look for it now since the name is so common. Look at Narbacular Drop, also in the same competition, made up a word so itd be easy to search for.
Actually about 10 years ago Slamdance games 2007 was cancelled because all the devs dropped out after hearing that Super Columbine was kicked out for being too offensive. Would indie devs do this if it happened today?

Probably not, unfortunately.

Those were the good old days when being offensive was a positive thing.

Is Burrower poison OP? Once youve laid caltrops, set a line of beartraps, and get in a few throwing knives theyre basically done with all the stacking. Paired with something like Frighten that prevents healing theres no way you could mess this up.

>wasting all that time and effort setting up complicated fights when you can just 1 shot everything

at least spoiler it dude

What do you think about dead state? Is it any good?

>TimelapseVertigo.Game

Im waiting for a sale. It was $5 4 months ago but wasnt on sale in the Thansgiving sale

Underrail could use some UI scaling. options

Underrail could use a rotate view button

>rotate view
>in a 2D game
You wat.

it's isometric you twat
you know what i mean

It works in isometric games, mate... That is, if you plan for it a little and don't have weird special cases of shit that can't flip neatly.

Commandos had it.

Most 2D isometric turn based strategy games do this. Disgaea for example

>blew up Arena's security camera
whoops

>start new game
>armory gives me a silenced 5mm pistol

what the fuck, I must've started 50 new games and never got anything other than the default 5mm, is this based on skills/feats or random?

that being said, the silencer actually HURTS me since reduced firepower means the outpost rathounds take more hits.. oh well, at least there's fences I can stand behind to plink them to death

>use electrokinesis in arena
>instantly realize my mistake
>use electrokinesis in the faceless takeover of tchortist institute
>did not learn from my mistakes

theres nothing like having 40 enemies on screen all aggroed on you in particular

What is this mod and is it complete yet because it looks like absolute fun.

Probably one of the free visual novels released in the early 2000s. There were a lot of great, thought provoking indie VNs to talk about in the days that Shii and his ilk were still active.

Now the download links are dead, the devs' sites are gone, and googling names and titles only gives database results. I should hook up my old tower and share what's on it.

Those are mods for the dev build of Nuclear Throne Together! The next release is getting mod support, so a group of modders has been hard at work trying to break the system, and at the same time, create mods so there's plenty to pick from on-launch.

> Powerups: Gives a player a random power-up at the beginning of each stage
> Omegaweapons: Enchantable weapons (Super Assault Rifle? Hyper Portal Sticky Flak Cannon? Digger Jackhammer?)

> Crown of Popo: A tryhard mod by myself that forces you to play as Rogue with a double cursed Rogue Rifle and makes IDPD spawn every 10 seconds. Has a kill counter for IDPD.
> Crown of Terror: A mod that turns every enemy into scorpions

> Dasher: Snowbot character
> *E*L*I*T*E* Dasher: Snowbot character, but it works with props and enemies as opposed to just cars

> And more soon!

All of them will work with the latest version of the game, and moreover, online.

>I should hook up my old tower and share what's on it.
user you would be doing the world a favor uploading it to nyaa or something
I wish I had my old computer still, I played a few of those indie novels around 2003

I forgot
>sit.mod.gml: Allows you to sit down with Cuz
>sitdeluxe.mod.gml: Allows you to sit on any prop

>And more soon
I wonder if anyone has that list of characters /ntg/ made up. Would be cool to see one of them available when these mods finally come through. I remember suggesting the idea of a raven.

The threads are archived on Fireden. I wouldn't mind giving it a swing after working on Princess Pitch from Hyper Princess Pitch, or putting some of the characters from banditmod into the game.

>pastebin.com/JnGYReQj

Here's a handful of them, but there were more. I wish I could turn back time and tell those stupid assholes that this was happening.

Can this be my house or will someone pop up and kill me for breaking in?
Also anyone have directions to the vrashed tunneler?

>Can this be my house or will someone pop up and kill me for breaking in?
I guess it can? You get your own house later on
>crashed tunneler
you're in the right area, keep going NE

Are mobile game aallowed?

why not?

>Nuclear Throne will never be back at the height of its popularity.
I feel like the only one playing sometimes.

Of course. An indie game is an indie game. If you mean mobile games in general I think there's a general for that.

Maybe if yal and the thronebutt administrator work out a system for dailies and weeklies in NTT, there will be a decent enough spike in activity to breathe some life back into the community. They mentioned it at some point a week or so ago, but I don't recall where that went.

Oh, of course

What's wrong with Daily's and Weekly's. I never really go for that option. Do they need to be more competitive or something? If memory serves I never really ever saw the leaderboards properly.

Like, in NTT? They were disabled outright by virtue of the fact that it was a mod. They were discussing making a separate leaderboard for it.

Also, the leaderboards are incredibly competitive between the highest rankers, but that's just standard fare for most leaderboards. Horheristo is a cunt, by the way.

Subterfuge is pretty good
Ever match is a week long, alots of strategy and tactics as well as diplomacy. Its free for android and iphone but in order to to unlock some game features it costs $5.

Basically you take over a map of outposts with 2-10 players. There is a main and private chat system for making allinces and deplomacy. Every day you have the option to hire a specialist that gives you different abilitys.
Although its a bit underrated the comunity is active, i would check it out.

oh it's like those old war games on kongregate
I miss battledawn
I'll check it out

>NTT
I'm silly and though you were referring to NT in its vanilla form. I'd sure as hell help make a leaderboard if I damn well knew the first thing about coding mods. Who's this Horheristo cunt?

Some cunt that was the highest ranked player for the longest time. He would accuse other people of cheating if they got high scores because the idea of it was completely beyond him.

Wow. What a cunt.

I just love

End Roll is cute

I also need more NT fanart in my life.

postin it now

I dont seem to have the second part tho

>bought underrail on gog
>no achivements

>No Popo
>YV doesnt know about Fish's past
This cast really does have great potential interactions. The whole alt timeline angle could make for a great number of potential scenarios and everything

>that one AU with punished fish lusting after quiet rouge

>He fell for the GOG meme
I was just kidding

>giving a fuck about achievements
I thought only 12 year olds cared about that garbage.

>That AU where Punished Fish loses all his friends from a secret raid by the IDPD and has to start over from scratch
>tfw this essentially happens every time you loop

I could just pirate it.

Cheevos in Undertail are pretty fun

>Do X 50 times
>Do X 50 times
>Do X 50 times
I will never understand why anyone gives a fuck about achievements. They don't add anything to games, they don't signify any actual accomplishments. It's like people with low self esteem think achievements will somehow redeem their shitty lives.

Dude it seems you don't know shit about achivements.

Enlighten me, Dorito King.

...

u wot

Also Wayne doesn't look nearly insane enough there. I imagine everyone in that game as fully insane.
