I tried calculating how damage and defense work in this game. Now my head hurts.

First things first all tests were done with a max level 3 star striker wearing no stickers that affected anything but his HP and no armor aside from what I was testing. All tests were done on floor 1 scratch tubers.

Also some basic shit. Each hand has an "attack" value that seems to default to 9 for fists. This value seems to be the "base" attack for weapons, as it doesn't change based on durability, strength of the character, or buffs like crushrooms. Additionally all fighters have a "defense" stat that defaults to 30. Level, vitality, number of stars, etc. don't seem to affect the base value, it's 30 for everything. Equipping armor increases the value based on the remaining durability of the armor equipped, so if you equip a 6/12 pair of pants your armor would be 36.

First the shit I found out about defense. It doesn't fucking matter. The most basic thing is that + to a defense type means you take less damage from those attacks, - means you take more. Pretty obvious considering the stat comparison screen but still wanted to test it.

The second thing is how VIT is applied. First off, VIT does not go into the defense shown on the stat screen, it's added afterwards because telling people their actual defense would be too simple. With 30 shown defense, a 46 point difference in VIT resulted in the character with 14 VIT taking around 30% more damage (numbers are vague because of damage spread and the low damage done by tubers since I didn't feel like paying 40k to test at more extreme values since one of my guys would just get one shot).

As for the effectiveness of defense itself, using two pieces of identical Guerrilla body armor with defense 55 and 30, the damage from the tubers attacks was 28 and 24. Equipping a piece of armor with around 200 defense brought it down to like 12 damage or so.

Next for attack.

First off, have some data from tests I did.
format is (attack shown on stats screen) - [remaining durability]/{max durability}
Weapon:
>Hammer(found on ground, no plusses) 14-16/22 an attack did 96 damage
>Hammer(+4) 19-31/31 an attack did 190 damage || 19-25/31 an attack did 158 damage
>Hammer(upgraded, no plusses) 36-49/56 an attack did 297 damage
(for the record an attack with fists does just a little less than the ground hammer)

So as you can see
DURABILITY DOES AFFECT THE DAMAGE WEAPONS DO!
However as I think we all know using an almost broken weapon is still way more powerful than just using fists except for when first starting out, so that base value shown in the character sheet probably is weighted more highly in damage calculation than the durability, which I guess acts like bonus damage or something. However it's still a REALLY IMORTANT AMOUNT OF DAMAGE when you're looking at two of the same weapon with really different durability left side by side.

As for how the damage calculation itself works, I dunno. Enemies have resistances and weaknesses just like players so there's too many unknown variables for me to do any calculations myself. Also getting an accurate data sample is fucking impossible because of damage spread and the fact that your weapon is constantly degrading.

What I'm taking away from this:
>Use the stat screen to figure out around how much base damage a weapon actually has because the "attack" shown on the weapon itself doesn't seem to have anything to do with that.
>Keep a completely fresh loadout in your inventory to fight bosses because fighting them in rags using junk from the levels is stupid.
>Lifeshroom buff presists even if you go to the fridge.
>Scratch tubers apparently have really high blunt resist or are super weak to blades.
>You can light yourself on fire in the waiting room and it won't do any damage but will make you look funny.

If you read here I made 2 different sets of attacks with this hammer at 2 different durability values.

The first set of attacks at max durability did around 190 damage.

Then I hit a wall for a while to decrease the durability.

The set of attacks I did at the new durability had a much lower average damage.

All attacks were against the same enemies (scrach tubers), with the same character wearing the same items, with the same mastery levels, using the EXACT. SAME. HAMMER.
