It's meant to counter res targets and cards that come back like olgeird and roach. so you place it on the opposing side, remove the roach (just as an example) the hag eats it and the hag gains 2 strength helping your opponent but now roach will never come back.

In the first round the started spamming the brigades or whatever is the name. Used a mercenary, thunderbolt into the neoyphytes, Aelirenn appeared while I was just throwing spies at him.
