it's not even reflexes user, people just don't realize how close to the limit of grip they are. you could react within 0.01 seconds but if your car can't slow down in time you're fucked.
my gf slams on the brakes all the time, managed to warp her front rotors of her car. i asked her how much more room to stop and she said she's got plenty. luckily she's never hit anyone but i've got a friend in the same situation that rear-ended a student driver.
This is what happened:

>had foot on brake as normal
>had about 25 feet
>roads were wet and a little slick
>notice too late my tires weren't gripping the road
>had managed to slow to about 5mph when I hit them

>maintaining 3 car distance
>dodge caravan slams on brakes
>start braking, fuckin nothing
>nowhere to swerve, frantically engine brake
>impact speed maybe 10 mph
>immediately eat the eighth of weed under my seat
>greasy mexican gets out
>makes sure his hatch still functions, gives me "ok" sign, leaves
>my hood, bumper, grille, fenders, driver door, radiator support all fucked
>baby it home and replace everything with mismatch junkyard shit that weekend
I was more pissed about losing the bud than the damage lmao. cops weren't called or anything.
Do the following
Maintain your car
Look at the whole road, not just the car in front of you
Stop getting into accidents
If you do the first two the third will happen.
The first frs in history where the accident wasn't it's fault.
In retrospect, I would've made the stop if the roads hadn't been a little slick from the rain. My fault for not anticipating.
Right, right, but if you look at the whole road you'll be able to anticipate the car in front of you needing to brake.
Watch every car in front of and to the side of you, keep an eye out for people getting over without signalling 3-4 cars ahead as these usually cause sudden slowdowns.
Watch some compilations of car accidents to laugh at everyone worse than you and make yourself feel better.
