In terms of a car being the absolute best in as many categories as possible, does the BMW E39 M5 take the cake?

I can't think of any car that even comes close to ticking so many boxes.

For current time though I'd rather a 2016 AMG over the m5

Yeah but it gets 1mpg, it's a nigger/indian's car and the maintenance costs are astronomical. Plus its a Bangle car, it looks good but its very shouty.

Handles reasonably well (not great)
Comfy interior
Reliable
Looks good
Can badgewhore
RWD
Not shit AWD system available
Not going to shit itself at every turn like an M3
Way better torque curve than the M3
Significantly better build quality than the E46/E39

The E92 M3/E39 M5/E46 are great cars but all suffer from too many flaws whereas the 335i is more balanced

Yeah but you don't buy an M car because it's balanced, no 335i owner bought one because they thought it was better than an M3. The M cars are on another level in terms of being able to produce boners.

The E28 is amazing and I'm still mad at myself for passing up one that was being sold for $12K a few years ago.

The Volvo S60R/V70R are close. But, they're compromised in the HP department due to Volvo cheaping out on the construction of the block, which you can fix (for lotsa money), and on the angle collar gear of the AWD system, which you can't fix.

The e34 m5 is in the classic category. All mechanical, raw yet refined. Hand assembled. The e39 is in the funky cross over era.

The e39 is 4000lbs, or 10lbs/hp. Not bad, but not great either. I would love to have on regardless.

Fitting four people is the least to expect from a 4door, it's not an upside. A 4door that doesn't fit four is a complete failure.

The E60 never was the fastest saloon as the E55/E63 W211 beat it on a straight line. But the E39 was the fastest saloon in the world at one point, I think you got something mixed up

I like the car, just hate how most people think that bmw just makes it some magical car. Sure, that power is badass for its time, but you have 450HP vipers, 405 HP almost 50/50 balanced 3200 pound vettes on massive tires, 03 cobras putting 390 to the wheel bone stock, all these cars with IRS and can do way over a G with sticky summer tires.

It is actually the other way around. Any new v8 sports car has way more HP, especially with mods. I have a DD with a fuck ton more HP. And you ALWAYS want more. My biggest regret is running 20 PSI on twin screw instead of a 76mm turbo, or even 67mm twins.

Like I said, great for its time, but not a god car. Just competitive with other great cars of the era.
