They aren't the same game at all, just two games in the monster catching genre. If you want an explanation on the battle system, someone can fill you in, don't worry the demo for the first game was indeed shit and not a good representation of how you'll go through the game. The demo for 2 was slightly better. It's heavily recommended to skip the first game and go straight for Yo-kai Watch 2.

Warning for WibWob: Don't try to play the third Hidden Stage in Terror Time. It will crash the game. Had it happen to me. Apparently the Yo-kai here is meant to be Eyellure but since he's not available yet, the game just farts out.

Beat Stage 10 with Tublappa in your party. You'll fight Badude and two Roughraffs.
For the second, beat Stage 20 with Blazion. You'll fight High Gnomey and two Gnomeys.
For the third, beat Stage 44 with Gargaros. Stage doesn't work so wait on that.

I figured out what's up with the Hidden Stage, in case anyone is interested.
Eyellure (Kirameki) isn't exclusive to this Event, even though he may seem like it to us. He's actually introduced in a later Map.
We were supposed to get the other two Maps already, but we haven't because NHN is trying to spread out the internationally relevant content; they aren't planning on even giving us USApyon until December 2017 at the earliest.
In Puni Puni, this Event ran a couple months after they got the Old Springdale Map. Since his data is scheduled to be added in that update, we're out of luck until NHN decides to issue a hotfix. They have a month, so it should come... eventually.

The more commercials I see, the more and more I think you can't actually play as Fumi, just that Mifu exists now.
You'd think that being able to play as Fumi after removing her would be a selling point for some people and at least shove a new piece of art of her in a commercial.

Not just that but all the promo art depicts just Keita and Inaho, kind of solidifying that Fumi's just for a side quest. I didn't think they'd add her anyway, I'm glad they didn't just because there would be no male option to even it out. It looks like they're really trying to move away from her role in the series, like Inaho wasn't already a sign of that.
