So I've tried out the oculus rift for DCS. It's cool, but it has major drawbacks that keep me from buying first gen VR.

The headset is fairly uncomfortable and starts to hurt after an hour and half.

Everything being in 3D is absolutely awesome and you can move your head side to side to look at the switches behind your stick which is cool. I like that you're able to turn your head around while pressing against the windows for a better view.

The graphics leave a lot to be desired. It really needs more pixels. Stuff is blurry so finding targets becomes even harder. The screen is dark, probably because of the pixel density of the screen.

Motion sickness can become a problem in a guns fight, I've found. It's also harder to judge distance for some reason, so I've smacked into the groubd a few times.

The biggest problem is everyone keeps coming by to try it out which is infuriating.

With it being uncomfortable, just try moving the plastic bit to be behind the 'bottom' of your head.

As for the motion sickness, I find it's mostly from looking away from any physical reference points, like looking up through the canopy during maneuvers. Give it a while, and you'll get used to it. The Gazelle, when you throw the collective up and cyclic forward, still makes my stomach try and fall out my asshole.

>citybuilder not welcome

we should fuse /cbg/ and /simg/ tbqh pham. maybe the threads wont 404 so quickly that way

>It's also harder to judge distance

Hol up, I heard the exact opposite on a bunyap sims video. He said it was much easier to fly close to the ground and just distance.

Are you sure it's not a setting you need to change? Are you using CV1?

I have Oculus as well and I found it's actually pretty good for VR

1. If your headset is uncomfortable you definitely need to adjust it I can do active games with touch for hours on end so you can too.
2. Turn of the pixel density if you can to 2.0
3. Just use the thing a bunch and the motion sickness goes away. The judging distance thing is also with practice however I've found that once you get used to it it feels so much more real and doing super memey close formations (like inches apart) and midair refueling becomes cake. It's as natural as driving.

Oculus is pretty great for DCS but it's just shit for seeing in the distance really, imposters are already something to complain about on 2d so that's a given.

Yeah the op just isn't used to it. It's a very big transition from planes being inches on your screen vs literal feet.

>shit for seeing in the distance

I was just going to buy this, is this really true? My best skill is spotting shit at extreme ranges so now I'm thinking twice about getting it...

Don't get me wrong. Flying DCS in VR is a fucking amazing experience and definitely one of the most amazing gaming thing I've ever done. However that being said with the old imposters (I can't vouch for the new system maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow.) it becomes more difficult to visually spot things especially in the distance because the resolution just isn't high enough. New imposters might have fixed this though.

Ive asked probably 5 times this year for an oculus testimony ITT, finally...

- Do you have to completely rotate your head around 1:1? Is it not possible to use it like trackir where you move your head slightly and turns alot ingame?

- Does your ingame head bob about and make it hard to focus on shit?

- Is it actually good for PvP or does hinder you and its mostly for the experience?

1. Yes you have to completely rotate your head I imagine if it wasn't 1:1 you would be throwing up pretty fast.

2. Your ingame head doesn't bob around it isn't like watching a vr recording, the reason you see 2d recording of VR stuff being so choppy is simply because your head is never perfectly still. It is smooth in VR.

3. It's mostly for the experience you will be gimping yourself in airquack and the likes. However the experience often outweighs the disadvantage because trust me when I say it feels like you're actually sitting in the cockpit.

I'm reading the mi-8 manual and the explanations of airflow over the blades and shit is vague as fuck. Watching a few videos has helped me understand a small bit of it but why the fuck can't they make the manual user friendly. It's like it's written for people who already know this stuff.

Real aircraft manuals expect you to know the basics of flight so I imagine it kind of mimics that. If you really want to know you'd be better off watching a few youtube videos about helicopters in general.

Definitely gimping yourself in viewing distant objects.

However, I haven't tested it with the new imposter-less 1.5.5 update. If it displays 1 pixel no matter what, I wonder if it'd display proper in the rift, too. I'm going to try that out rn and report back.

I think the uncomfortablness might be because I'm a gook and have a wider face than the white master race.

I was really excited for VR but now that I've tried it out, I might actually use the money for a new 4K monitor. Dont get me wrong, its awesome really fucking awesome, but it makes target aquisition very hard.

Yeah I totally understand you but I still honestly think you could make an oculus comfortable if you really tried. VR is fantastic but target acquisition is already somewhat difficult, VR makes it twice as hard.

VR makes me twice as hard

I don't give a shit about VR until it actually has high resolution. Computing power will quickly outstrip the "demanding" nature of the current headsets if they don't hurry up and make them worth buying.

>mfw learning to use Ka-50

This for me. A buddy has an occulus kit from about 3 months ago and it's a really novel experience but at their current iterations they're pretty poor to actually play with. Also, trying to find keyboard keys is a bitch unless you have a camera pass-through display option like I think the HTCs have.

Ka-50 is a dope aircraft

did they ever overhaul the textures in the ka-50 cockpit to not look so FC2-era?

Not as far as I know

Ricardo texture mod did their job for them

Yeah but even that. The ka50 is from an era where the dcs engine didntndo too well with specularity

Can we have more DCS ops?

but that one has those gross dark spots

Can we have more BMS ops?

Just keep anime out and we're good

This. Last night's pvp ops were pretty fun.

Just need:

>at least one briefing image
>no repawn

Simple PvP ops like that are all I ask. Small teams going up against each other with an objective.

Making them honestly would be easy as fuck, even I could do it. Literally any scenario works.

ohayƍooo am i still banned?? hello test test

yo mah yo am I still banned? hello test test

welcome back soldier

WHY IS ANIME BACK? ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Hey remember when the thread died last night lmao that was hilarious as fuckaybe anime could have prevented it

I will never allow anime here because i'm scared i might end up liking it. I don't want to be a filthy weeb so its banned.

Typically when you're reading a POH, you already know the basic rules of aerodynamics and how they apply to a type of aircraft. You're more interested in finding technical details and specific handling quirks than trying to learn about Bernoulli's Principle

You can bump the thread without anime.

Try posting on topic.

Do any of you guys play on the 104th I heard it was a good place for skilled pilots. I played last night and thought it was pretty realistic.
Any thoughts?

REALIZMS

DCS is a arcade.

>Coulds can mask the head of a jet engine to a modern IR seeker

You`d be suprised how committed some people are to shitposting.

They can, infrared radiation is absorbed by water vapor (ie. clouds) extremely fast and extremely well.

i hate sweden so fucking much i hate everything they fucking do and i sure as fuck hate the gripen that piece of shit mom's car of a plane fuck you fucking socialist feminized faggots

...

>I don't know how clouds work and what can they affect
Example of a DCS moron

Missiles are for faggoilis

You need to imagine that putting on the HMD transports you to the place you are seeing. Real world does not allow you to turn your head a couple inches and you are not able to see directly behind you. A real pilot wears a helmet that limits visibility and FOV, same as a Rift does(FOV a bit worse on Rift but still). They are also strapped the fuck down into their planes. While you are not and can move easier than real pilots. Using a VR set lets you feel even closer to what it is like to be a real pilot. In addition to the 3d, scale, immersion etc. it makes it the most unique gaming experience I have ever enjoyed.

Yes, the one trade off for now is that a monitor delivers a sharper picture. That is it. But VR is not a huge drop, and the gains are worth it to most. I mean the game looks great in VR still. MP airquake fests are not how I game so no issue for me. And from what is being reported, next gen sets just might resolve all those clarity/spotting issues,

roadtovr.com/display-cong...s-vr-headsets/

I already put $1k aside for next set once ready for pre-order. Which I think will come 3-4th Q of next year. At least I hope.

roadtovr.com/display-conglomerate-jdi-developing-ultra-high-resolution-panels-vr-headsets/

Some other user here,

one other disadvantage it has is you cannot look outside the game.

For example, if I have a kneeboard and I want to look at it to write something down I need to remove the VR set.

This issue isn't so important for airquake but for missions where you are required to write shit down it can get problematic.
