I went in relatively unbiased, I chose two favorites from each element, one to reroll and one to start dash. I rolled Albert after only about ten tries and then start dashed Jeanne, thus started my journey in light. Haven't regretted it once.

No you've got it right, Fire/Wind/Earth/Water have higher magna weapon drop rates than Light/Dark because the latter two are meant to be the good elements while the rest are just stepping stones to get there.

Switching the game setting from beta to normal should fix it, but auto attacks will be slow as hell.
Other things broken for me are the login screen, gacha crystal screen, job change screen, the click-through screen in between story quests and some summon animations.
