How did Haruka do?

It takes 1000 sales to get a physical release and Haruka got a physical release. If eroge companies really only sell 30K copies, even 1000 extra copies where they only get 15-20% royalties isn't anything to sneeze at.

Rance will likely be 1000ish at launch. Through the 9th it was probably 500-600 sales, and then through the 16th it probably pushed at least another 200-250 sales, as a rough estimate between sales chart performance and order numbers. From the 16th it will have another week worth of sales before launch.

That said, the question remains how it does at and after launch, especially as word of mouth begins to pick up. Ideally it will remain in first or second to a new release on the sales chart for most of January.

Haruka was released as they got their new payment processor, so its pre-launch data isn't going to be comparable. Haruka sold very well at launch though, but more importantly it had a number of weeks in the top slot on the chart near launch, and was included in the MG charts for the rest of the Spring and most of the Summer.

Obviously what MG pulls in isn't going to be comparable to a new Alicesoft release in Japan, and Haruka's sales to date seem to be a several thousand (and Rance should either match or exceed that, being Rance). Although in the end any money made here is extra revenue stream they wouldn't have gotten otherwise, and Alicesoft commented that the Western sales of Haruka were quite good.

I imagine Rance will do better with a far broader known and appealing game, although there is a bit of an open question of how many MG nukige customers will grab Rance compared to Haruka.

Some people probably don't know how depraved nukige can be. Sure Rance has a lot of sex, but there's other content in there.

Maybe they'll buy it even if they don't know Alicesoft because it's by the same maker as Haruka.

That said, I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't know. Most places with discussion of nukige (ulmf, hongfire) also talk about H-games, and Rance is pretty famous in that community.

The question is how many people brought Haruka for the porn vs purely the gameplay.

Rance should do better regardless, as it will enjoy far stronger support from those looking for an H-title with gameplay, not to mention that Rance is a well known franchise and a shit ton of people have played Sengoku. Just one part of MG's regular customer base, those who buy eroge solely for the porn, might not be quite as enthusiastic about it.
