just happened to me as well after installing a couple addons, logged in just fine less than 30 minutes ago

I always use a boar early on because that charge is sexy as fuck and then switch to something more DPS friendly when I get deeper into the BM tree because the boar doesn't have an energy dump like claw. Bears and turtles aren't bad either if you want a tank.

Ignore stats entirely and pick whatever you enjoy the idea of most. Every pet is viable. Last time I leveled to 60 on a Hunter I used a green spider from Teldrassil for the entire time and had a blast.

The novelty of picking a pet you personally enjoy the idea of far outweighs the small difference in dps, and BM Hunters are imba at leveling either way.

Objectively wrong to say all pets are the same. There are tiers for solo PvE/PvP, and group PvE/PvP. Boars are the easiest to level with as an all arounder, while cats are the best to level with on a pvp server (if you can't get broken tooth, get a SoS jag at 1.3 AS). To say leveling with a spider (only has bite) is the same as a carrion bird with -ap or cat with stealth for big openers or a boar with a 1s root are the same is why people hate hunters like you.

Shot timers like Sorrens, or others that have been posted. CCwatch (if I remember correctly) to keep track of your trap timers, or if you spec otherwise root timers. coolDown to keep track of well, your CD's more clearly. I think there's a trinket swap addon somewhere, but macros work just as fine, and aren't super needed till you get ES from AQ vendors. Hunts don't really need specific addons to work properly. Just have a clean interface, and bigwigs to not stand in fire, and you're set.

Actually, people love seeing hunters who unironically use different pets. I made a lot of friends who liked inviting me along to instances simply because they knew me as the hunter with a pet spider (maybe also because I don't suck at the game). The only exception to that is in raids, where Hunters absolutely need to be perfect in order to do decent dps. Then you want a wolf with furious howl rank 4 (ideally broken tooth, but worgs are fine too).

If you're BM spec your pet will still be doing a shit-ton of damage pre-60. I've never had anyone complain about me using a spider, because for dungeons min-maxing is irrelevant and any sane person knows that.

I never brought it up once, and never needed to. The only time I ever had a discussion with anyone about pet choice was when I asked guildmates about what pet I should bring to raids. Unlike you, most people understand that getting through dungeons is 90% about being adequate level and not pulling too many things at once.
