I think it's that the mechanic doesn't really work at all at first unless Kaede gets better at lying. Otherwise another character calls her out on it, and someone else intervenes to move the trial along. So far whenever Kaede lies she keeps getting called out. The mechanic might not even do much in the grand scheme of things. Illusion of choice.
