My understanding was that CS want to study the zone as an ecosystem, with the emissions, storms and all (and so are more about preserving the zone as an environment), whereas the ecologists want to study it on a micro-scale, e.g. mutants and artifacts. Though I've never given it too much thought since I have never been able to play more than a couple hours into SCS before I get some crash I can't get around.
