It's definitely different than past Ateliers but I wouldn't say it's bad. It does start a bit slow compared to the other Atelier games though.
The combat is changed up and I liked it more than Arland, but less than Dusk
Alchemy is pretty fun
No time limit, but Dusk games were already moving away from that anyway
Exploration is about the same as Ayesha. You unlock more places as you progress and you need to find certain things in certain areas to unlock new recipies so you're rewarded for exploring at least a little.
It was just put up on the Flash Sale, so price is $24 with no extra PS+ discount. For the price I'd say it's worth it.

Is Sophie not shit? I'm playing Ayesha now and looked up some gameplay and the impression I'm getting is

I did see there were some quests that had to be completed in a certain timeframe like "kill this monster within a week" or something but aside from that there's no time limit business.

Well, I ask about the PS+ thing because I have a 3 month in reserve and I'll consider using it if it drops the game down to $20, especially considering that I have a principle of never paying more than $20 for a digital title unless extreme circumstances call for otherwise.

Well ok let me try to explain it to you

combos consist of mixes of square and triangle, triangle is usually a solitary attack, O is the launcher attack which changes depending on how long you hold it and after you launch an enemy you can tap O quickly to warp to them.

R is for dodging

X is jump and if you hold it down for a bit you dash.

Dashing at a downed enemy drags them high into the air with you and starts off a phantom technique, each one provides a boost to your damage % that persists until your combo ends. The different phantom techniques are

dance: simple aerial square square square combo

strike: launch the enemy again once he's in the air with an O tap

blast: hold down O to send them flying far away, use the O tap to quickly teleport to them afterwards or else they'll fall to the ground before you reach them.

fall: triangle attack that sends you and the enemy back to the ground.

delude: different from the rest since it doesn't need a downed enemy to perform, do a last second dodge against an attack using the R button while dashing, very hard to perform.

You can perform each of these up to three times while in the air (except fall because when you touch the ground the count resets). With each additional phantom technique used the amount of damage % increase grows.

Your super bar fills out as you hit enemies and once you fill one out you can activate Drive and have your weapon transform, it heals you, adds a permanent increase to your damage % and extends and branches your combos out even more. Drive stages are 1, 2, 3, and final.

There's also Connect, a super mode that makes it so any damage you take is diverted to your super bar.

Best way I can describe the general feel of the game is that it's about maintaining momentum, you try to quickly max out your damage, then you try to keep your combo going by quickly finding enemies to beat, you can slow down how fast you lose your combo by spamming dash.

Yes, it's not shit. It's different than Dusk. Smaller map than Ayesha, worse characters, better character interactions, better combat, different alchemy, worse plot. Game centers about doing new items.

While the game encourages you to keep your combo, sometimes you'll be forced to lose it because levels have collectables in them in the form of fragments, chest guards and challenges that you will search for extra lingerie.

Outside the story, the game has heart novels which are short skits between any two characters, to get them you need to regularly return to the base between missions and tap hearts floating above characters' heads, this is tedious because you need to cycle between playable characters to tap their share of hearts.

There's also a challenge and survival mode.

What difficulty should I be playing VD on for my first general playthrough? Normal seems easy, but if I go hard and unlock a new character my rank goes down due to lack of power until I rank them up some.

I assume both rank and difficulty effect XP so its hard to say which way is the better choice, but I am thinking going back to normal so battles take less time will likely be better in the long run until my sluts are leveled more for hard.
