It's 500HP because they redline at like 2000rpm, but ~2000lb/ft of torque. The powerband in each gear is basically 1200rpm-1800rpm.
You really don't need the power to keep weight rolling along flat ground like those road trains. Lots of low gears, and then even more gears so you are always right in the power range. Probably the same 500-600hp engines as the highway trucks.
It's normally just one. 10spd transmissions have one stick with a range selector switch on it. 13spd and 18spd trans will have one stick with the range selector switch and a red button to split the gears.
