Worse than Destiny. Destiny inflates the common armor's stat drops over time so it's easier to reach the maximum levels. 5 does the opposite, inflating the REQ pool and making it even harder for new people to get what they want.

Someone did an AI test about a year ago and found that the CE AI actually had better situational awareness than 3, 4, and 5. They couldn't test 2 AI for whatever reason. Something about the code being wierd

Not surprising. I used to do a lot of work with Custom Edition map making and molding back when I was like 14-15ish. CE AI, particularly the elites, work in a way with their environment that I don't see in even most games today.
It's not so much that they're that "smart", it's more the way they interact with the boundaries around them. They have very good understanding of walls and lines of sight.

Situational awareness isn't hard to code though. It's mostly just increasing the range of when the AI knows you're around. Think of it like giving them a radar.
Bungie intentionally decreased awareness in later games to make the AI less difficult individually. Keep in mind that later games can show more enemies on screen though.
