Mazda Miata RF vs Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ

The Miata RF, the hardtop convertible, is basically going to destroy sales of the FRS/GT86/BRZ right?

Maybe in Europe or parts of Asia. Outside of Veeky Forums, Miata's are looked down upon in North America. Whenever anyone sees someone in a Miata the word "gay" comes to mind. I see 86s everywhere.

In NA miatas are seen as feminine and modern ones certainly dont have the fan base the old ones do. BRZ and GT86 constantly have a large and active modding community and are cheap and fun. I doubt that would destroy the niche.

Not unless they fix the engine that couldn't pull the lighter club spec car round a track faster than the 86.

It is more expensive but you're getting a folding hardtop convertible and the weight is still less than the BRZ/86.

Miatas have been modded for 25+ years and the cost is comparable to GT86/BRZs.

The MX-5 is faster. The RF is probably a little slower, but just tune it a bit. Getting 30 more HP in the MX-5 is far more noticeable than 30 more HP in the pig FR-S.

Yes the GT86 is faster. But you're talking about a 2.2 second difference across a track that takes more than 3 minutes to get around. That's pretty much a wash. I don't really see the appeal of the GT86 anymore unless you really need the rear seat space. MX5s are a ton of fun, weigh hundreds of pounds less, cost is the same, can be modified easily, and you can put the roof down on nice days.

At least in the Midwest, Miatas and GT86s and BRZs sell for within hundreds of dollars of each other for similar trim levels. 2 seconds on a track that long is nothing. 15mph+ top speed doesn't matter either. Miatas have been used in many race environments for decades so the tuning community is very, very strong. I'm glad that there's a choice between different types of sporty cars in this price range. Though I don't think the argument in favor of the BRZ or GT86 is as strong as I thought it would be.

That's true. Mazda packages the "Club" trim that has the LSD with a more expensive sound system and LED lights and a few other non-performance options that drive the price up. Similar spec, the price is within $1000 though.

Two seconds on a 3:00+ lap is literally nothing. Two seconds on a sub 1:00 autocross track is huge. Top speed in tiny 4-bangers like this doesn't matter IMO. I'm more interested in the gearing for daily and track driving.

FRS interior is 90s aesthetic, which isn't appealing to some but honestly I wouldn't miss literally anything that the miata has over it.

If you guys knew anything about what you're talking about or took a minute to study the history of anything, you would realize that the MX-5 has been pushing 140mph stock since the NB generation. This chart is completely fabricated, I guarantee you the top speed is much higher than 129mph or whatever random number the author came up with
