Yeah, at the cost of crippling him permanently (until Senzu beans came along). Even King Piccolo and Majunior, who left him with all his limbs broken, couldn't manage to permanently break him. In addition, Vegeta's Great Ape form manages somewhere around 160,000 assuming that he's telling the truth and the Oozaru is, in fact, ten times stronger than a Saiyan's normal capabilities (which would make sense given that Goku's Oozaru was able to kill Grandpa Gohan, who gave a Roshi-surpassed Goku trouble himself).
If they would have fought, Vegeta would have won. The only way Goku could have defeated Vegeta would be using the Kaioken, which immediately floored him after using it against Zamasu.

There was no-one else for Goku to take against Vegeta, he wasn't going to put his son in anymore danger than needed, and Krillin was the best person to protect the rest in case Goku were to die in the fight.
Either way, it was Piccolo who decided that they needed to work together, and Goku was thinking of ways to defeat Raditz before Piccolo revealed himself anyway.
