I just read about how people can only rescue people who have gone to the dungeons they themselves have gone to, or conquered. For example, you can't rescue someone who died somewhere on some floor you haven't been to. Some say that the rescue thing is limited to post-game dungeons only, but that sounds pretty stupid. Overall there seems to be really little information about the whole thing, being a Shiren game on Vita and all, but I can try to find out about things better when I get home.

He's just another party member you can take to dungeons with you. The servant thing is just kind of his thing, he being the son of the richest man in the village and all.
