Sort of, but not really. The only games that need sticks are space sims (both new and old) and flight sims. Most games are designed around gamepads or mouse and keyboard these days. Gone are the days of the ubiquitous joystick.

Elite works way better with a stick because its handling revolves around motions that are best done with a stick. Star Citizen, not so much, especially because you aim and fly ships with gimballed weapons Freelancer style with the mouse.

Elite Dangerous doesn't really sim the "space" part of it , but rather the social and economy of space age human life, well at least it models NASA's star map.
