The drivetrain on those is very interesting, and definitely gets better gas mileage than a prius.
First things first you gotta diagnose whats wrong with it? is it the battery? or One cell in the series? There are plenty of people that repair these batteries, and they can do them for dirt cheap, because they buy the cells, and wire them, themselves.
If you get one, make sure it's a manual, this will help your mileage efficiency. Secondly, you want to get a joystick that allows you to control ratio of Electric>Gas so hypermile effectively. Third you want to do mods that reduce drag, and increase thermal efficiency.
