Depends on aplication.
I will assume nothing sporty because of the open diff.
For vans and pick-ups or other cars that will have a lot of weight on the rear axle RWD.
For normal cars FWD because of less parasitic loss and more traction.

agreed. however, I meant it more so in a sport application rather than in commuting/hauling

so in terms of performance and handling, would you prefer FWD with an LSD or RWD with an open diff?

I have had loads more fun driving a shitbox mid 2000's Corolla around at the limit than I ever did in a Miata. Handbrake tricks and slides are so satisfying in FWD, plus once you learn how to do monster weight transfers you can whip around effortlessly with minimal inputs.

FWD is not a meme, it's a good drivetrain layout that has only gotten better and better.

This though, the only acceptable engines in FWD are straight 4's, preferably turbocharged.

Can always add a limited slip diff in on the rwd car.

With the fwd car, no matter what you do you still are left with a fwd ecobox
