Not him but you can check any census site or use an addon. They aren't 100% accurate but they are the best we have to go by since official numbers stopped being reported during WoD. What they ARE good at is indicating trends, as in if numbers are moving up or down, etc. Last I looked, US was at under 2million - and it should be noted that the census addons count characters, not accounts, and that not every server has adequate reporting (usually relatively empty servers or very inactive auction houses).
These addons do not factor in china stuff, and also relevant is that the way subs in china were counted "officially" was always a little bit weird - most of their accounts pay by the hour (or did, it could be different now) and ANY played time during that quarter would count as a sub.
Anyhow, no real way to know but he is likely close to correct about actual numbers. Anecdotally, all but 1 in the big guild I was in have quit since Legion launch, and participation in rated pvp is very very very VERY low at the moment. Retail forums and mmochamp are convinced the game is up to 10mil us subs. My guess is still around 2million.
