Yeah, that's pretty much it.
Try to keep BBs on fire if you can. Shoot at DDs if they pop up. Don't go out trying to tank BB fire.

With tier III try not using HE at all against cruisers, if you're on a ship with a decent amount of guns (Like Kuma at tier IV for example) just fire AP at any cruisers that are broadside and let the battleships deal with other battleships, if there's no cruisers nearby, sail behind battleships and fire at enemy battleships and DDs with HE.

Also don't show much broadside, cruisers are squishy.

I've mainly been doing that but I don't feel like I'm contributing much, if at all. Early I had my best match because I just went silly and swung my ship's butt out to launch a wall of Torps and sank 2 others and just bullied low HP ships with HE.

shove your AP at their waterline (there are red paint which signifies their weak point)))

If you don't show much broadside you won't output full damage, but you also won't take full damage from AP fired at you.
