I'd consider them both equal, and let the styling sort it out. I personally prefer the Fiat styling, and I dislike the ND. However, I do realise that between the two designs, they'll have 90% of the market cornered with an excellent set of roadsters.

Let me clarify this a bit:

124 makes
>160hp @ 5500RPM
>184lbft @ 2500RPM
This makes for a 3000RPM powerband.

ND makes
>155 @ 6000RPM
>148ftlbs @ 4600RPM
This makes for a 1400RPM powerband - half the size of the 124's. Also, it's down 36ftlbs compared to the 14, almost 20%.

They're about equal in terms of power, but the 124 has superior torque output and powerband. This compensates the turbo lag beautifully.

It gives me a boner every time I see it and it's similar to a Miata performance-wise. But Miata cost 25k Euros here while the Abarth cost 40k Euros... Almost twice...

Also sound. This thing (especially the Abarth) sounds amazing.

Abarth's sound's amazing, color scheme is breautiful, and overall it looks better than the Miata, but it costs €40k (€44,4k full optional). It's €10k more expensive than the most expensive Miata.

The power-band difference is more than you make out because the 3000rpm is a greater proportion of 5500rpm than 1400 is of 6000. (65% or the range from idle to peak power rather than 27% assuming a 900rpm idle)

The MX5 is always in turbo lag mode.

If you overlaid those two, you'd get something like this.

The 124 has a bigger powerband, more usable power (especially down low - great for DD), and the ND has 500 extra RPM, and no turbo lag. In practical terms, they're so close that the driver will determine which one is faster.

I like the concept, I like the way it looks, I just can't abide by the un-necessary complication of a fancy retracting roof. The whole idea of a Miata was minimal gadgets for minimal weight, which meant you could still have fun with minimal engine.

The multiair turbo motor is an unreliable chuck of shit.

the main advantage of the ND is torque from idle to 2600RPM (ish), and the top 500 RPM like you said. both cars should be about the same in terms of overall speed, but daily driving the ND will be easier with the better lower torque band (ie. where you drive when not hooning) as well as better real world milage.

keep in mind this is from a guy who:

124 gets better mileage offboost(off throttle), so I'd say they're pretty well-matched in terms of DD.

I'd say you're biased, but who cares. Fiat and Mazda have got you covered for every possible roadster, turbo or n/a, retro or modern. It's a great time to live in.

There's not much to improve though. The only thing that would happen with a nice twin scroll VGT is that you could go for a bigger turbo - so an identical looking powerband, just with more power.

Ok, I have been investigating and there is a Fiat Version and an Abarth Version. The Fiat 124 cost more or less like the Miata and seems cool as fuck. And we Europeans can import it from Italy with no problems. I think I like it more than the Miata, maybe I will buy one someday since they are not very expensive.

Sadly the abarth doesnt really offer anything more over the base 124.

Only great appearance to be honest. Fiat is better quality-price wise. But if somebody has the money to spare it really looks better than most cars I have seen.

It offers a better color scheme, 30 more HP, Bilstein shocks, Brembo brakes, and a self-locking differential.
