I miss when the games had these epic shounen anime kind of stories. I find it hard to really care about what's going on in the newer games because it doesn't feel like there are any stakes.

Sure most of them were mediocre or downright terrible but it's better than years-long gaps of nothing.

the newer games just don't have the same kind of heart or charm that made me like Sonic in the first place. Something about them just feels really empty and bland to me, I don't know how to describe it. But I should probably stop talking now before the "SONIC DOESN'T NEED A STORY"people come crawling out of the woodwork.

They're my favorite Sonic games.
Only from a story standpoint. Heroes' level design alone outdoes everything Shadow attempted from a gameplay standpoint.

How did the fans/critics react when Sonic Riders was first announced/released? I really like that game but it seems like no one besides the fans really care about it or even know that it exists
Shadow was honestly a game that gave the player too much branching. Sure it was neat that you could go on a bunch of different paths depending on what missions you did, but it resulted in only having 6 levels per playthrough, which as little as only 1 boss depending on the route. What they should've done is have the player go on every level in each playthrough, with only three final bosses/endings depending on how many hero or dark missions you did.
They were the first 2 Sonic games I ever played, and the first games I bought for PS2, so I love them based purely on nostalgia.
It was neat that Sonic finally got a new racing game since IIRC the only ones up until then were on the Saturn (R) and Game Gear (Drift, Drift 2). There was a vocal minority of "WHY SONIC NOT RUN" autists. Critics thought it was mediocre but not dogshit. People hated Jet, mostly his voice.
I rather play the game four times than finding the good ending for the game.
Jet easily has the worst voice of any Sonic character.

Shadow is one of my favorite characters but I seriously think it would have been better If he had stayed dead at the end of SA2. His death had so much impact and then seeing him again in Sonic Heroes with little explanation was kind of shitty.

I didn't mind him coming back, even though it cheapened his death. My only problem was that bringing back his amnesia again which led to Shadow The Edgehog was what ruined him for me.

Old continuity does its own thing and shoves game stuff in there, but most of the time, it is explained in-universe.
New continuity often references events from the games and tells the reader to play those games to find out what happened in those stories, but, it tries to make it so you get the pertinent information.

You can enjoy them without having played a lot of the games, but you'll get the most out of them if you have played at the very least 2, 3&K, and the Adventure games, but you'll never be completely left in the dark

I think the level design in Shadow was probably the worst of 3D Sonic. People often complain about speed and loops being "scripted" in 3D Sonic, but Shadow's levels really had no flow or rhythm. Just flat areas with enemies to shoot at connected to other flat areas by short automatic loops or slopes.
