Its earned its reputation as being the last good series. E46 was okay but it was probably the last good one of the main models. Currently the best ones are the less popular ones like the 1, 2 and 4. Even the current 6 is pretty good actually.

The E30s are starting to hold their prices now and some models may start going up. Automatic, 4-door and convertible E36s are still reasonably priced, though a 2-door manual E36 328i is going to be a little costlier.

As says, the E46 was the last "good" 3 Series. Or at least the last good-looking one. From E9x onward they became bloated.

We also had a Fiesta XR4 which wasn't anywhere near as fast but it'll be cheaper and easier to take care of. Still a good A to B car with a bit of spirit.

I actaully can't find anything that says they have no dipsticks so it might be just a meme or something from a concept car. I've worked on a few late 2000s models and they had dipsticks I think, at least the 3 series did.

Reliability depends. 3 series are pretty reliable, 5 is very reliable, 7 is a world of shit when it starts to get high kms and the X series can vary. Apparently the 4 series is the most reliable of all the models right now.

For a lot of the luxury reliability shit it can mostly come down to owners, particularly women being the owner. I know the V8 X5s are pretty bad and love to shit oil and the the X3 is pretty bad in other ways. The 6cyl X5, the X6 and maybe the X1 are the only X series I'd ever go near.
