And first gen models couldn't get the 2ZZ GT/XRS models with AWD. The 2.4 GT/XRS are second gen only and still FWD.
If you want AWD in a Vibe/Matrix, you get the base model engine.

It's salvaged, it has a hot burning smell, 2 tranny rebuilds and the driver's seat is crooked and is fucking up my spine. Also, both front windows don't work, and are held up with vice grips

Thanks, if/when i move, I will have a company truck I can take to home, so i wouldn't need a commuter. I think i can deal with bad mileage for awhile. I like the idea of a 4x4 4Runner. I'm afraid of that BMW X3 due to ignorance of German cars... Neat that they came with a manual actually.
Samurai is neat, but 3 cylinder.... and awful gas mileage, and I feel like it might be dangerous slow on Cali freeways.
Have known some friends and family with bad, bad experiences with modded Cherokee's. From overheating to the Dana30? failing, driveshafts falling out, and breaking on trails...

You have to pick what you want. You can't have offroad capability and good manners on road on your budget.
The cherokee is cheap. You could fix any problems with money to spare. Same but to a lesser extent with the land cruiser. If you have a job and decent credit why not put the 6k down on a 20-25k vehicle?

also 2010 and newer had a 2.0. you COULD get AWD 5 speed 2.0 and i plan to get one. there is a reason they made a rally car from it.
the hard part is finding one, but aftermarket parts are surprisingly easy to find compared to all my other cars

2007-2013 US market SX4's were all 2.0L.
2007-2009 they AWD model was available with a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic.
2010-2013, the AWD model was available with a 6 speed manual or a CVT automatic.
