The ELO system is also explicitly designed for 1vs1 chess matchups and isn't statistically valid for a multiplayer game. For example, take 5 players with evenly matched ELO scores. Put them in a 1vs4 matchup, which side wins every time?

Microsoft/Bungie had to implement a proprietary version of ELO (called trueskill) for Halo 2, 3, and Reach, because they recognized that the game was team-based and there was more to a fight than simply a 1vs1 rating.

Planetside 2 is even more open-ended, where it is not only team-based, but massively so. Where large numbers and significant force multipliers exist.

Ram with the galaxy and have the reavers finish it off if it didn't die.

If it isn't taking into account team oriented objectives, vehicles, different weapon types, organized and dis-organized squads, and a whole lot of other shit, it isn't a useful metric for planetside 2.

And it isn't. It's comparing players based on who they kill or who kills them. It is functionally equivalent to an ELO system even if it doesn't use the exact same algorithm.
