The prologue proves that the auditions, or at the very least, the black-and-white video where they all look happy to be given their costumes, are fake. Nobody has been brainwashed yet, but they remember being kidnapped, Kaede is afraid of Monokuma, and everyone acts pretty much the same as they do in the game. They definitely aren't happy to be given costumes, they're creeped out and confused.

At the end, Shuichi doesn't know about this because he forgot the prologue, but he assures himself and the others (and the player) that nobody would voluntarily sign up for something like this, he knows Kaede and Kaito better than that.
