Yeah unless you want to count fake fans who don't actually play 3S and just jerk it off
optimally there will only be one frame each rep where you don't block: when you hit neutral. so if you shorten the length of the backdash, you're doing more cancels, which means you're vulnerable more often.
remember, all you want to do is cancel the recovery frames, so when your backdash is no longer creating distance for you, that's when you go into down-back (or when you see your opponent going for a low attack) to cancel it and continue blocking.
so, yes, you got it right. it's not like a wavedash or dashing in your opponent's face; you want to do back, neutral-as-quick-as-possible, hold-back-until-recovery-frames, down-back, repeat. so it'll feel like tap-tap...pause...move thumb/fingers down, tap-tap. whereas a smooth wavedash is just a bunch of tap-tap-tap.
get into the habit of blocking a lot. out of sidesteps, sidewalks, wavedashes, and even forward dashing. when you do it right, it cancels the movement into block while maintaining the evasive properties, which is extremely powerful and is the main reason why backdash cancelling is so core to the game. it's like walking backwards in a 2D game, but having walkspeed of jesus on wheels, safely creating space very quickly.

it's a full armor move that also can't be thrown, so it can be dumb. luckily they're easy to bait, but plenty of people lose to it, if only because they play around it and it never comes.

What guilty gear character should I build my house on?
When you see yourself having trouble with something test if instant blocking helps. The two most common instant blocks you should be do are :
2nd hit of Sol's bandit revolver which gives you a throw punish
2nd hit of Ky's stun dipper which gives you a better punish.

Japan is only bad at western fighters, smash and marvel. they're better in everything else,especially anime.
it's a rhythm game. if you know common and effective stuff, you just IB according to the rhythm. you can also react so some things and IB properly, like ky 6K or sol gunflame.
some stuff may not be worth IBing, like venom close slash. also, if you mess up an IB, you can't IB anything afterwards for a bit. you can still block, but not IB specifically.
