automation is;

1) expensive as all fuck. meaning you have to have a huge amount of capital investment in order to do it

2) requires a stack of highly skilled/educated motherfuckers to keep going. take a look at pic related. the guys who are essentially joystick jockey's for this thing command 50$+ an hour, and have been known for "taking a shop hostage" in terms of offtime/benefits.

the problem is that nobody wants to invest that much effort into developing a skillset just to go work in a factory in some irrelevant flyover state.

In the long run it is cheaper for companies to maintain a fleet of specialized robots than it is to maintain a fleet of human workers.
