overhyped, but not a bad car

Made a name for itself on being great for the price.

It's not a bad car, but the price you'd pay for one now means you need to have a specific interest in it or you can get something much better.

This will be Miatas in 15 years (Maybe not in the US, you guys seem to have tons of the fuckers)

cars like these are fun because they make you feel like you're going a lot faster than you actually are.

an example of what youre getting yourself into

newhaven.craigslist.org/cto/5983320100.html

slightly cheaper if you are on the west coast though

jesus, the back side looks like shit
>$8000
cause >m-muh jdm bumper
what a shitbox

Stock rear suspension is pretty shit and the chassis needs alot of work

Needed IRS and strengthening from the factory

yes it's a great car despite not being fast.
Overpriced tho. Rare af in north europe.

The car is fun and handles well, but it's all really about the idea of an AE86. Pluspy made the car a legend and it's still probably the most romanticized vehicle 30 years running.

It's a great car, but not for the reason you may think. The ae86 isn't some amazing handling god tier machine that can easily beat a gtr drifting up a hill. Sure, the car is well balanced with rwd and an lsd, but the lack of power and the live rear axle actually make it a very challenging car to drive fast. You can't rely on power and irs to correct your mistakes. These characteristics, along with its light weight made the ae86 one of the best cars for learning driving technique. Are they worth the money with the ever-increasing anime tax? Absolutely not.

>it's still probably the most romanticized vehicle 30 years running.
DeLorean.

Why the DeLorean

Really nigga?

Back to the Future

That's not really the same though. It's popular, but no one really thinks highly of the car itself just because it's the focus of a famous movie.

still half the price of a mk2 escort

>but no one really thinks highly of the car itself
It's only famous because of the movie (and probably is the ONLY reason people think highly of it) though. At least the 86 is thought highly of without initial d being a thing, which justifies the romanticism.

They were to Japan what FB RX-7s and MX-5s are to America.

Which is to say they were cheap and RWD and anything else was a bonus.

Sounds like a foxbody.

So why not get a foxbody which also has a lsd, red, and v8 manual for a bird of the price?

Thanks to being fucking meme car its prices are ridiculous and parts are scarce and thus are expensive. If you can find a part, desu. Other than that it is nice and fun car to drive around and probably among the cheapest ways to go into dorifuto culture.

>needs irs
Irs is a meme

>cheapest

Nigga I can pick up 2 CRXs for what I can get for an 86

why not get an ls1 fbody that has a better engine, trans, and lsd from the factory

>corolla ae86 is way lighter

As a '99 Z28 owner, I can at least say that the F-body feels exactly as heavy as it is, and that it lacks modern advances (IRS, stability management, magnetic suspension) that make today's boat anchors nimble.
A set of sticky tires and subframe connectors (I have a T-top so it's a wet noodle chassis from the factory) do help though.

>I just want to start my "man-cave" in my basement

kek

It's a fun little car, but the fame it gets jacks up the price way too much

seems like a better idea to just buy a non converted american gts, fuck the gook bumpers, etc and just put your own MAP sensor instead of the american AFM to help with the power difference

aw11 is better :^)

Noriyaro has a good video on it. Massively overpriced in the US.

Prices are already on the rise, unless you want the 1.6L automatic ones.

bro, CRX is fwd

No chance in hell. The prices are already rising and on top of that, they aren't as ubiquitous.

maybe for 3k

Its serviceable as a light rear wheel drive commuter.

It is not a racecar.

It's a 1980s Corolla.
It's a fun, light, RWD one, but nonetheless a Corolla, and there are many better cars that are worth far less, and are far easier to find in good condition.
Unless you have more money than sense and really, really, really want one for some reason, it's not worth the rice tax, JAY DEE EMM BRAH tax, rwd/drift tax, Dagumi tax, Keiichi Tsuchiya's favorite car tax, etc that it have burdened it.

It really isn't
Just cheaper

old meme, not & never will be a classic.

Slow as fuck, but incredibly fun to drive.

nah it really is stop being delusional

its allready a classic

D O
Y O U
L I K E
M Y
C A R

nah it isnt
it may be slightly faster stock (supercharged model) but theres a reason toyota raced the ae86 globally and the aw11 was just marketed as a sporty secretary car

the aw11 was raced globally in one type races and low end spec tournaments alongside the ae86, the reason why the ae86 is so popular is that tsuchiya turned it into the drift meme car, and then initial d solidified it as the weeb rice mobile

the mr2 has a better axel and grips better than the ae86, it just cant drift worth a shit

LOL no the AW11 is better

and guess what, the Miata is better than both. Mazda stronk.

NIGHT OF FIRE

the only overpriced one I've found is an import in Austin that's about 16k, the rest are pretty cheap. Though it's a pain in the ass given that they have like 6 names, ae86, trueno, sprinter, corolla, hachiroku, etc.
examples:

seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/5965773454.html

seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/5985899937.html

seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/5970936642.html

Because the AW11 isn't a touring car.

>austin.craigslist.org/cto/5974765696.html

>BEAMS 3SGE Swapped

HNNNNG

its worth more like $10k tho, not $16k.

Yes. I love the raw driving pleasure it brings.

got any pics of yours?
