Provide a front line, and deny area. This goes for both attack and defence

your team loses when scouts/pyros/spies can go deep for free, the sentry and tele give your team both a place to retreat and a place to get forward faster.

To get better at engi? dont go for kills, hold area. This is why sneaky engis that build a sentry and tele at the enemy last are so destructive

secondary to this, if your teams front line moves up far enough, move your stuff up, if youre about lose first, pick up your sentry/tele and move back premptively so you have a line ready just behind that point, and not giving it away for free just waiting on second. Deny ground make them work for every inch. If a lot of them die punish and move all your shit back up closer and make them work to push all over again.

Watch Uncle Dane. He gives good tips about building placements on different maps.
Move up gear when required, you may need an escort to distract enemy team while your lvl3 redeploys. Ask for help of Pyros (and sometimes Demos if no Pyro present, but most won't comply) to deny uber or defend your sentry. Scatter your buildings against collateral damage. Teles don't need to cover a long distance to be useful, but making an alternative long path abit shorter and keeping it hidden always appreciated.

to calculate your cm or inches per 360, you have to move your mouse until your character turns 360 degrees in game, and measure how much you moved your mouse with a ruler or something
