Just how? You have to deliberately either push the stick down or pull a tab up, otherwise reverse won't engage.

I've driven both, and easily got used used to both. I actually owned an example of each at the same time.

Come to think of it, I had third where rev was to the right and forward too.

It really made no difference to me.

I drive cars with left front, left rear and right front. With a wheel for my pc with right rear.

If it's a 5 speed the only proper location for reverse is far to the right and down.

If it's a 6 speed, only acceptable location for Reverse is far to the left and down.

6 speed needs a lockout ring for reverse or else it's cuckshit.

Do most manual transmissions make you press down on the shifter in order to shift in to reverse like on a MK4 Golf? I've never driven any other manuals.

Lots of them have a ring on the collar, underneath the shift knob, that you pull up on with your index and middle fingers. This unlocks the gate to reverse gear.
