I got to thinking: All-wheel drive isn't usually used on bikes because of the load transfer during acceleration and the fact that it means higher weight for the bike. But wouldn't AWD be really helpful when you're going through sand etc.? And not just because of better distribution of the drive across a larger surface, but also because if you lose traction and don't go anywhere, the spinning wheels will stabilize the bike and prevent you from dropping it.
Also greater control during willies if the front can be stablized / destabilized by spinning it up or slowing it down while in the air.

Way harder to make an AWD bike than AWD car for much less benefit. Which is saying something when off-road automobile racers still prefer 2WD because they're more reliable, have better suspension travel, and weigh less.

there is an article in a moto magazine about 2WD bikes, there is a unit using a hydraulic pump and slave motor that powered the front wheel. They installed it on a GSXR if I remember right (definitely some kind of sports bike) and the results were promising but fell out of interest due to weight and the ever improving ability of traction control to manage absurd amount of power on the track.

One is air cooled, one is water cooled, one also has much better suspension, those two alone make up a lot of the difference.

Even in cars the only place single drivetrain AWD is really the thing is loose surface rally and ice racing, where the traction is low but the surface is relatively smooth. On higher traction surfaces even FWD is faster up to like 350hp unless you force them to be the same weight and on rougher terrain the drivetrain complexity becomes an issue.

Then you apply that to a bike where it adds a relatively high degree of complexity compared to the incredibly simple rear chain drive and the front wheel is so unloaded it isn't even on the ground all the time. They're probably okay (and really easy to ride) enduros and the military uses them but they seem like a reliability and maneuvering nightmare for MX or really nasty shit.

it's a frankly awful idea.

In a racing situation the front tyre of a motorcycle is used to it's 100% maximum grip, it cannot take any more force mid corner. The most dangerous part of the corner in terms of likelihood to crash is the exact moment the throttle is cracked, this can overload the front tyre very easily, you will see this crash in motoGP a lot, that's when they fall about an inch to the ground.

now imagine we're also sending torque to the front wheel when we do that, it's the worst idea ever.

it'd have to be computer controlled to not kick in at that moment and only come online as the bike is picked up, but very soon after corner exit the bike already has very little weight on the front wheel.

So it'd have a useful range that is very small, about midway through corner exit and nowhere else.

wouldn't be worth the complexity or unsprung mass.
