there is nothing here. everyone who has any ambitions leaves. it is a shithole and even the patriots you meet online probably live in the west, so don't listen to them. i only live here because i have to stay to take care of my parents now, and my father refuses to die anywhere but Riga. we have no future except as part of a greater union, in this case european union, because on our own we are a dying nation. i would prefer if the union would have been russian union though.

this is a personal thing. I prefer Russians because my father is Russian, we speak Russian at home, and that makes some things more difficult for us here. I understand why Latvians prefer the EU. In the end the point is the same. We are worthless as a independent country. I just would prefer a different master. Either way I am a poorfag with no prospects, but with Russians at least it is my people.

I guess it's not my job to tell you what your country is like, but since independence, Latvia has had a lot of economic growth, as well as an increase in civil liberties. I don't know how you feel your family is being persecuted, but minorities, even Russians, are protected under EU laws, whereas being a marginalized minority in the Soviet Union was shit.

I am not trying to fight for return of Soviet Union. I was only 6 when it fell, and I do not remember much, but I am not one of those nostalgiafags. I think you misunderstood me a little bit. I would not want to go back to those times, but if it could have been my wish, all the Union Republics would have stayed together in a transition into a new state post-communism.

That said, late Soviet Union was not so dangerous as you think and most minorities were not "marginalized" any more than all other citizens were (like lack of democracy).

Clearly, the situation is different for everyone, and especially different for Latvians compared to Russians in Latvia, but I do not think numbers properly represent the way life here has changed.

like every communist system, they pioneered a new wave of civil rights for "persecuted" groups which placed them in positions of influence, and, like in every other communist system, after successive policy failures, allowed those same groups to self-segregate so that it would be easier to purge them, as they slowly became rivals to the power structure.

both china and russia moved from initial policies of tolerance towards gays, liberated women, and minorities, to killing large amounts of them as they became rivals when the reforms started to cause people to starve.

no "proof" is going to show that they were only angels, or only evil. the problem with communism is the cycles of killing that follow the ecstatic phase of liberation

Also I forgot, I meant Russia is okay in that it is impossible to pretend Russia is scary oppressive bogeyman like it was during Stalin. Not really, most of the time they just repeal all the old laws and don't put new ones in place. Homosexuality was very much looked down on in Soviet medicine despite Trots saying "Lenin decriminalised homosexuality"

it was not all run by Russians. Throughout the 70 year history more than 50% of the higher ups, military generals, and shot callers were all Ukranian. However, representatives from all the republics had a say in central government. They only chose to the Russian language because it was more widespread than others.
