I tried once, but got carried away and never finished it. Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that Saihara's relathionship with Kaede comes off as a deliberate parallel to other MC relathionships regardless of Kaede being/not being into him.
A girl enters MC's life, helps him change for the better, and romance is hinted as a possibility -- but nothing is confirmed outright. Girl then dies tragically, further kickstarting MC's development.
Kiri, Nanami and now Kaede all match this pattern. Kiri probably is specifically referenced, since detective role is reversed, Kaede is warm and friendly instead of being cold and distant, and also dies instead of surviving. Do you see what I'm trying to say?
