1 is size. Look at all the other cars it competes with in the WRC. They're of similar size
2 is weight. The Yaris weighs a lot less than its competitors in street form.
3 is the Yaris has been stagnant. The drivetrain has not been updated, beyond ECU's, since 1999. The Chassis has not had a proper update since 2006. The only new thing the 2012 update brought was new looks, a slightly longer wheelbase, and available rear disc brakes on the SE model.

The Yaris hasn't been innovating to keep up with competitors. What's a surefire way to get great R&D for production? Racing.
