It's because in the US, the police shoot first, and ask questions later. I literally have three friends that have been shot at by police. One of them will never walk again. Did any of those three commit any crimes? Obviously they did. But the crimes didn't justify getting shot for such as stealing hood ornaments off cars.

Many cops are legitimate assholes that abuse their power. Not all of them, but I've definitely had some unpleasant experiences and I'm a polite white guy.

As much as we like to pretend it's not a problem just about every American has encountered a PO being a dick just because he feels he can, and when they have a gun on their hip in plain sight people tend to be more cowed in general.
Firearms in plain sight are a pretty good deterrent and in our current comfortable positions things that deter us also tend to scare us.

Oh and the knowledge (at least in my case) that every single officer in my state carries around a literal arsenal (shotguns and AR's are standard issue for the cruiser's gun rack in Dallas)

The incentivization of police that began during Nixon has lead to unaccountable law enforcement using overly aggressive tactics and will stem to greater militarization of policing in the future. As individuals most of them are good people, I'm sure, but corruption reeks through every agency in any sizable US city. I am in no way saying that all police officers are passive, granted it may seem that it came off that I was. Corrupt cops are out here, of course. I was only referring to the good police officers while blindly ignoring the bad while typing that out. So, my apologies on that part. I do of course support the first amendment and don't support an officer arresting you for obscene speech even though I find it is disrespectful to our law enforcement, but then again I don't like my rights being infringed either.

If they follow you for enough time then they could probably stop you for anything. They can arrest you for "disorderly conduct" then let the courts deal with it. Need money to defend yourself in court properly, overworked public defender will encourage you to plead guilty because they cut you a deal for reduced effort and money. Harder to find a job after that. Cop won't get punished for wasting time even if you're innocent. American culture is very used to "if they are having to deal with that then they probably did something to deserve it."

It's highly unlikely, but a bad cop could make your life highly inconvenient. Most cops I personally dealt with were good, it's just my brain's risk/reward ratio from seeing worst case scenarios.

Every policeman is armed, and the only justification they need to search your car is 'I smell weed'.
Then they can claim 'I feel threatened' when you protest that, and shoot you dead on the spot. Car has drugs planted in it and is seized, then sold at auction while you rot on the roadside.

It doesn't matter if 90% of cops are good guys. It doesn't matter if 99% of cops are good guys. It doesn't even matter if all but one cop in the entire country are good guys. Hell, I'm not even sure it matters whether there's a single corrupt cop in the entire country.

What matters is that we've somehow created a system where the police are wholly unaccountable, view themselves as separate from and superior to the people they're trying to protect, are trained to think of people who break the law as non-persons, and are increasingly equipped with military hardware in order to fight what I suppose could be considered a "war on violence," in the most nonsensical and tone-deaf manner imaginable.

Any individual policeman may be a great guy that I'd love to kick back and enjoy a beer with, but the entire law enforcement system from local PDs to the FBI is toxic to the point of being antithetical to the safety and wellbeing of the populace. We're at the point where we would literally be better off without police than with them.
