Why is the Mitsubishi GTO so much cheaper than its rivals of the period (R33 GT-R, Supra, NSX)? As far as I can see, performances weren't hugely worse, but the prices are about 10x less, at least where I am. Was there something significantly worse about them?
Why is the Mitsubishi GTO so much cheaper than its rivals of the period (R33 GT-R, Supra, NSX)? As far as I can see...
cause they're not as nice
Please elaborate
90s Mitsu electrical gremlins, parts are uncommon and it wasn't anywhere near as well represented in movies and shit as its rivals.
I'm not too well versed in 90s Mitsubishi electronics, but wouldn't parts and such be just as hard to find as the Supra and worse for the NSX?
I'm trying to justify the difference using facts and figures, and aside from popular culture and looks, I can't really find a clear cut reason. Is the drift tax just that great?
It's fwd
Didn't set clear goalposts, but assume top of the line 24V VR-4 GTO, otherwise it's not really a fair comparison
Way heavier. Lots of understeer.
Electrical issues accompanied by mechanical problems.
They just aren't reliable, at all.
Depends, its mostly neglect... you will find a shit ton of vr4s for 6K and they will have a ton of issues that were never addressed so...
But prices are going up in the US, the neglected ones are dying and the properly maintained ones are still on the road.
I've seen vr4s with more than 250K... a z32 TT is waaaay more unreliable.
The engineering done to the GTO is exquisite, the engine is a tank... it's a great car overall...
You see a GTO and you just think... damn that's nice.
>Was there something significantly worse about them?
They were made by Mitsubishi, the worst Japanese car maker.
I own a 3000gt, its not insanely rare or anything
parts are not that hard or expensive to find either
here are two warehouses
3sx.com
3swarehouse.com
And there is always someone parting out their 3000gt at the forum for good deals. A quite a bit of people own them and there are write ups for practically everything
3si.org
The reason the costs are down is because its a 20-30yo car with no inflation. The reason the cost of Supras are insane is due to hype, period. NSX's also have this supercar mistique to them even though the 3000gt can blow it out of the water.
Just be mindful its an old car that could have had multiple users so be prepared to wrench some things. Its a nice car to work on, and drive on the weekends
>but wouldn't parts and such be just as hard to find as the Supra and worse for the NSX?
Not at all do you see how active supra and NSX focused forums are?
especially compared to a shitty heavy Mitsubishi
80s-early 2000s were good
posting superior a mistubishi
The twin turbos is the same weight as a Supra + transfer case and rear diff
What are you smoking?
suck my fat uncircumcised cock.
>Fwd
They're not as desirable because they were never featured on Fast and the Furious or Initial D, and the FWD versions are very common so people think of them as shitboxes.
You're still looking at over $10k for a VR4 that isn't thrashed to shit, so they're not too far behind the FD in terms of value. It's certainly worth more than the equivalent Z32.
It's in the name.
"Mitsubishi"
Something about that name just says complete and utter fucking shitheap.
>hey're not as desirable because they were never featured on Fast and the Furious or Initial D
wrong. Its just ugly and slow compared to it's rivals.
>ugly
Subjective. I fucking loved the GTO as a kid (the one with the pop-up headlamps) and I still do.
>slow
Granted it was quite heavy and wasn't as agile for that reason, but it's no slouch by any means.
Also it had four-wheel-steering, AWD, a ton of gizmos on the interior, and a twin-turbo straight six. It was a sports-tourer.
The reason they're so much cheaper is because the ownership costs are just as high as the others, but it doesn't have the all-or-nothing sportscar driving feel. Nor does it have any boy-racer status.
It's a great car.
The GTO (3000GT VR4) is basically a testbed for a lot of cutting edge street car tech in the 90's
Consider half the things on them are exclusive to much more prestigious cars even in this day and age
>AWD /w AWsteering
>adjustable aero (spoiler mainly)
>adjustable suspension
>adjustable fucking exhaust note
Among other things, and literally ALL of them are controlled by 90's tier electronics.
An electrical problem on an older Eclipse might short out a light or radio.
An electrical problem on a 3000GT could very well end up with a very stupid situation all considering
Now you'd think all these fancy gimmicks would make the car more valuable no?
Well you see you assume the average joe or whatever the common name in your locale is doesn't have the aptitude or the time to dedicate to keeping these things running. They see "GTR competitor" and automatically think they can run them into the ground with no problems and then unload them for pennies on the dollar when the problems start adding up.
In short these cars are cheap because they are a combination of complicated maintenance wise, hard driving, and silly owners.
Be very careful, and do note this post is mainly formatted for the GTO AWD (not MR) and mainly geared with my experiences with the USDM twins
And to put the maintenance needed in perspective , a fucking 540i is cheaper to maintain in the long run
>straight six
if a straight six is when you take an inline cut it in half and then mount it sideways in the engine then yeah it's a straight six
In my experience a Z32 TT and a VR4 go for about the same price, with Z32s at the low end being 12k and the higher end of VR4s go for around 15
Will say it is far harder to find a boomer trying to sell his sick VR than a Z32 tho
I've seen maybe 4-5 Mitsus and 12-15 Z32 TTs on my local CL over the past year
I see good condition (clean and stock and running without major issues) Z32 TTs go for 8-12k and good VR4s for 10-14k. YMMV.
What area? I'm east Texas over here and finding a Z32 TT that's not an NA with a swap for under 10k is pretty rare
Of course, I post that and then check CL and find this, among other gems.
Go figure, I need to check CL for the cars I look out for again
dallas.craigslist.org

this thread is now my personal CL thread, sorry OP.
HOOOOWEEE THE FIRST 86 I'VE SEEN IN MONTHS
WHO HERE /TOFUTAXED/
>GTO
>Straight-six
>Mitsubishi fanboy """""""""""""""""Intelligence"""""""""""""""""
take your flamboyant shitposting elsewhere, this is my thread now.
check out what this retard did to his s2k.
should I become catstang and cop?
OP here, thread sure took off since I went to sleep lol
Reason for asking was this is the most expensive GTO in the region (8.5k NZ translates into about 6K US) and looks insanely clean, granted it's not the TT. Z32s around here are about 15k NZ for a decent one and something like a GTR or NSX ranges out to 40-50k so it got me thinking why the price gap and if it would be a potentially good investment.
As far as I can read from the thread, one which hasn't been thrashed to shit and has been properly maintained can pretty much run with all the other big names of the day?
No, buy an NC instead and have a superior car.
Yes. I have worked on 3000GTs that shit over built evos and STi's. There aren't many Supras or Skylines in america that punch the same weight nowadays (most supras and skylines are owned for scene points or drag racing) but assuming you line them all up bone stock, yes you would have a -very- good race.
>objectively the worst miata styling-wise
Nah mate NC aesthetic is shit-tier. I'd take the Fiat 124 over that bland tard
Yeah, but the 124 isn't $5k. If you can afford one, get an ND, obviously. The S2000 is worse than the NC in every way, though, and you can Ecoboost swap an NC for cheaper than replacing the engine in that S2000. All you need is an engine and ECU from a wrecked car, an exhaust system, and a big fucking hammer to clearance the firewall to fit the DI booster pump.
spotted the 16 yo driver
And I'll still have a car far uglier than anything I could create at Autozone. I can live with the NB even though it's not my preference, but not the NC.
Thing is so confused as to whether it wants to be an ND or NB, and it''s fucking horrifying.
Put an RX-8 face on it. They're so happy looking.
At that point I've spent enough money to buy a used 400HP V8
The 3000GT is the heaviest of them all by a wide margin.
the interior
it's plastic like all the other cars of its time, but the design is just terrible
Or an air dam. $30 worth of materials and a substantial aerodynamic benefit.
My complaint with the NC was that it is ugly as shit. I don't believe that would help it. At all.
Really tho, Miata owners are generally two types
>poorfags looking for babie's first RWD cash car
NA/NB because none of these poorfags want to throw 5k at an ugly car
>richfags who can afford to have it as a dedicated track/autoX toy and in their case, they now buy the ND.
The NC really occupies a unique position in the Miata market as it's too expensive for poorfags and too old for richfags.
And it's ugly as shit.
Like fuck man.
It's not even Multipla level of outlandishly bad, it's just genuinely -bad-, like a girl named Helga in America. You already know what you're in for.
I think you're comparing stock NC's to modified NA/NB's
As an NB owner I may upgrade to an NC one day, they look great with a little work
That NC on the right is nice, I actually like that front end
>modified NA or NBs
Oh yes because when I specifically mention BABY'S FIRST RWD CASH CAR and imply 5k is too much for them, I'm totally talking about built fucking racing miatas.
I'm comparing the fucking markets of buyers, not the goddamn cars performance.
Better than a Pontiac solstice atleast
What are the mods necessary to get that aesthetic?
Can confirm this, the only time I've ever been in a gto the steering angle sensor fucked out and the rear end was going lock to lock while we were doing 100ks on the motorway. If you thought broken hicas was scary you haven't seen this shit
They are starting to get more expensive. Only two years ago a 300zxtt was as cheap as 6k on trade me, now dealerships and prospectors have circle jerked the price up to near 20k. In fact I've seen that one dealer faggot list one for 22k PRICE IS FIRM!!!1!
Same thing is happening to gtos
Photoshop 2017
>Considering anything but a NA when there are still plenty of good ones left.
NC = I'm a poser but couldn't afford the used Z4.
I don't think they look that bad. I'm an NA guy and I'd never own any other Miata (except maybe an ND RF, god damn they're sexy), I'm just pointing out that the S2000 isn't a good buy at any price. It's just always the wrong tool for the job, regardless of what the job is.
This. Pretty much.
The problem is finding one that has been looked after and maintained. Naturally, if you see cheap aftermarket wheels and stupid mods here and there, stay away from it. It's too risky.
There's too many things to list when talking about what to look for when inspecting a car, but you can easily tell when the owner of a car genuinely loved his machine and knew how to take good care of it.
My mistake. I think a sequential TT I6 would've been such a perfect engine for the GTO; the engine bay might be cramped if they could fit it in there but man...
>Why is the Mitsubishi GTO so much cheaper than its rivals of the period?
Because it was never had a prominent role on TV or movies so it avoids the meme tax.
they look good/super wide with just coilovers, wide wheels and hardtop or PRHT
Dude all MX-5s look awesome. Okay?
Can everyone just accept that? All MX-5s are cute little cars with great handling and simple technology, and have the potential to look like serious race cars.
>the engine is a tank
HAHAHAHH CRANK WALK
Anyone who says the 3000GT was slow or couldnt turn is a fucking idiot.
>faster than an NSX around Streets of Willow. A tight track that should have highlighted a heavy understeering cars deficiencies.
>graded for slightly more understeer than a FD RX-7.
>graded as less understeer than a tail happy C4 Vette
>grading and driving done by a F1 driver.
300GT's have shit tier Mitsubishi build qualoity and reliability. But they are not slow or bad handling cars. Anyone who says otherwise is a retard.
>slow compared to it's rivals.
Wrong
see:
they seem kind of redundant with the evo being a thing
I have a n/a dodge Stealth and that's pretty much the same thing as the GT. 450k on it with mild repair. Ripped out the auto and put a 5speed in at 230k.
Best car I've ever owned. Might try and find a parts turbo on and swap everything over.
It understeers heavily which makes it feel like shit. The R33 GT-R was absolutely faster due to better handling. The GTO could never break about 1:09 on Tsukuba while the R33 was consistently around 1:06 and the R34 around 1:05.
The GTO wasn't a GT-R killer. It was more GT and less R. With work I'm sure you'd be able to make one better than the R33 GT-R but you have to know what you're doing.
>The GTO could never break about 1:09 on Tsukuba
do you even watch bmi lmao
I'm pretty sure that a lot of these comparisons were done with unlimited cars with tuning. Tsuchiya rather famously caught on to this with the R33.
If you want to compare, at least try to have a test that isn't just weak competition. The GTO got its shit kicked in by real competition: youtube.com
youtube.com
I've literally never seen a BMI episode where the GTO beats a GT-R other than the R32 GT-R.
trying to judge the performance of the gto purely based on tsukuba is pretty slack. think of what kind of car it is... open twisty roads where it can actually stretch out, nothing in its class (grand tourer) could touch it
>I've literally never seen a BMI episode where the GTO beats a GT-R other than the R32 GT-R.
considering the gto was dropped in '90 and the r32 in '89, i wonder why
It's almost entirely due to the popular culture meme tax.
And that generated interest in the vehicles, which drives aftermarket support. You're still paying a fair bit in the first place, but if you can afford the vehicle itself you're in more of a position to.
>that one bus cuck that mixes up the 3000GT and Eclipse
>Moving goalposts
I get that it's more of a GT car than a sports car but come on now it was never some wildly performant thing like the GT-R.
It's still really cool how insanely ahead of its time it was, but towards the end the 58/42 weight distribution, 3800 pounds or so of curb weight, etc. meant it wasn't going to be competitive no matter the trick AWD system.
The GTO-MR was sold for like 10 years. Really not a great justification considering that they started barely ahead and then fell behind big time.
that dude was missing every corner desu, no wonder hes seconds behind on laptimes
those gtrs are beasts though, not gonna lie crazy racing trims
>Moving goalposts
no. that was you with,
>The GTO could never break about 1:09 on Tsukuba
and then "a five year newer car is faster!"
The results afterwards were time attacks where they tried to get the best possible lap. BM reports battle laps and time attack. Usually you will see that the actual race pace is far below the time attack because street cars cook their brakes/oil/tires/coolant fairly easily and can't handle lap after lap of all-out driving.
The point I was trying to make was that it was never really competitive with the R33. And no that's not an excuse considering that the R32 -> R33 was the only major jump for the Skyline GT-R over the course of 13 years. The GTO could've easily been updated to compete but they just chose not to.
FWD-based AWD, pigfat 3760lbs, sloppy suspension made worse by pigfatness.
