Project car thread

UK car amateur enthusiast.

Really want to give it a go with my first project car. Been researching good tool sets to buy and pretty happy there. Just haven't managed to settle on the car.

I'm aiming to pay £500 ish for the car in the first place and have found a few. But I wanted to know Veeky Forums's opinion.

Favourite contender right now is a Peugeot 205 1.0 XE. Pretty good knick, was wondering for a first time would it be feasible to get it up to at least gti spec?

Also post your project cars and talk about em.

If you want a gti, buy a gti.

Try finding a cti instead

>If you want a gti, buy a gti.
This. They aren't expensive

If you are looking at them I hope you know how to weld

Bizarrely enough, there are two GTi models; the 1.6 and the 1.9. The 1.9, naturally, has the better toys.

The 1.9 made, when it was new, 126 BHP, it had all-round dics brakes, leather seats and a modified exterior like new bumpers and bigger alloy wheels.

In all fairness, the Pug 205 is a good car, I was considering one as my first car if, quelle surprise, the insurance wasn't a bitch...

Any opinions on 97 celica st or gt? Few cheap ones about and seems like I won't have to engine swap.

Problem with the gti is they go for at least 10x as much, for the rougher conditions. Looking at prices for parts and the cheap 205 1litre it seems cheaper to spec up the shit 205.

Plus I imagine I'll learn more.

See how you like the 309 gti, should be cheaper. It's essentially a slightly heavier 205 gti with a less twitchy rear axle.

Been looking at the 1986 Nissan 300zx as a project car, since there's one for $450 on CL. Been sitting for 5 years though, so would I just need to replace the fluids and some belts or would I have to do more? Also, would it even be worth it in the end after everything is said and done?

Not worth trying to make it a GTI, if you want a more sporty look then make something like an XS rep or fit a Maxi body kit.

There's loads of things you can do to improve performance it's just a matter of how far you want to take things, which mostly boils down to money.

Still collecting parts got a tremec 3550, ford 8" rear with torsen, l33 alloy block vortec, lsxrt intake.
only cost me a grand so far

if you dont care about being able to afford the insurance swapping the 2zz-ge from a celica into a zzw30 mr2 is supposed to be fairly simple. you would need to buy both cars, but if you can find a mr2 with a blown engine and a celica thats cat c/d then you should be able to do it for pretty cheap. That or C20 swap a nova, been done loads of times before. Again, just dont expect to be able to insure it

Probably only gonna use the car for weekends occasionally. If I can give it enough go I'll take it to track days. Don't intend on insuring all year round. Just do temp insurance.

The celica is starting to peak my interest. Lots of em about and relatively cheap. Fair amount of parts too. I imagine the two litre its got is enough with some mods to get it producing a fair amount of power.

On another note. Anyone know of any good places in the south of england that offer renting out for car storage/workshop?

Been looking but can't find anywhere reasonable.

Its much easier to get more power out of a boosted engine than an NA

if you are under 21 dont expect to be able to insure it at all, temp or not, especially if you plan to declare your mods. Im 20 and a bone stock mx5 is about 1k a year, but with any mods at all nowhere will insure me.

23 with 5 years no claims. So I'm hoping insurers will be nice. They were OK with mapping and exhaust change on my abarth punto. Just asked me to pay an admin charge for updating info.

Yeah I don't intend on keeping any car I get NA.

>cant get insurance because of evil dangerous mods
Remind me never to visit England

UK insurers hate young drivers. Probably because unlike the States ,for example, we don't buy slow trucks or heavy sedans/classics. We buy light hatchbacks and mod them, then some of them drive like pricks on the road and cause accidents.

Insurance isn't more expensive for higher risk people in higher risk cars? Nice socialism bro.

>letting the big guys decide what you can and can't do
Now this is what I call cuckoldry

eh fucking go for it then, you can actually get modified car insurance so you wont get cucked as bad. If you want to have something with forced induction you could probably turbo an mx5 for reasonably cheap if you don feel like swapping an engine

My project car/van is a T5 Transporter.

Going to be max comfy when it's done.

I swapped a Nissan RB20DET into a Mercedes 190E. I've mostly finished building it and I'm already looking for my next project car.

>then some of them drive like pricks on the road and cause accidents
MOST of them drive like pricks on the road and cause accidents.
They had to ruin what was a nice fast road with overtaking opportunities because fucktards overtook at the wrong time and slammed into oncoming traffic, or swerved to miss oncoming traffic, punched through a fence, and slid through a field full of expensive ponies towards a major motorway.
Another road has frequent police patrols because of morons driving too fast for the corners and understeering or lift-off oversteering through the fence on the outside of the bend and having to be craned out of the field on the other side.
And the dipshits killing cyclists on roundabouts because they didn't have time to check while driving at 100MPH towards a roundabout. They ruined THAT road as well.
Then a moron hit a bridge that predated the invention of the car and knocked bits of it onto a major rail line. Blocking all four tracks until they picked up the debris. The insurance company couldn't pay to fix the bridge; they literally couldn't get the money because the bridge cost more to fix than their company was worth. The local council ALSO didn't have the money to fix it, so the government had to pay up with taxpayer's money.
Add to that insurance premium tax because of 'whiplash' injuries going through the NHS, and then outrageous interest when you pay monthly, which young people HAVE to do because they don't have a grand or two laying around after saving up to buy their first car to pay for it up-front, which then adds MORE to the monthly cost.

On a related note I'm really happy with the new law of banning new drivers (2 years of driving.

Not sure how long the ban will last but it'll definitely take a lot of retards off the road.

Don't understand peoples obsession with using a phone whilst driving. Its the best feeling not having to think about your phone and enjoying your drive.

Don't even hook that shit up to my cars Bluetooth.

most people view driving as a chore

They're just not like us and appreciate the driving experience, it's just a means of getting around and in some cases a status symbol typically leased. Their priorities probably are with using a messaging app.

I'm just happy the law will prevent some of this happening to make roads a bit safer. Everyone thinks their a good driver and can do it until their veering off the road or worse.

Drop an EW10J4S engine in

Renaultsport Clio.

I bought my PH1 172 for £800. So cheap and so much fun.

There's no real point in trying to get owee out of the engine, but there's a lot of work you can do on the chassis and suspension.

Declare your mods you fucking spastic.

It's idiots like you who make premiums high in the first place.

Have you tried Adrian Flux? Very good for modded cars.

not him, but i couldn't get a reasonable quote from adrian flux for my modified mx-5. they're still worth a try i guess

Sky Insurance or Need2Insure are better than Flux.
