Probably they just weren't tightened enough. if there is not enough force holding everything together the wheel moves relative to the bolt and snaps them.

In a lot of the older cars with popups you can turn the light knob on and then quickly back to off and the lights won't have gone up all the way before the motor reverses to go back down.
