For one, despite the jokes, staying alive is a legit skill. Especially when it's playing ring-around-the-objective while you buy time for teammates to make it back in overtime.
And you'll never land as many shots as a hitscan or faster projectile character, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be contributing in combat. Those peashots can be the difference between a character who dies and one who gets away with a little bit of health.
