Go out and buy a hydraulic floor jack and some decent stands.
Don't use a scissor jack, they can collapse on you.

I have the same fear user. I also cringe whenever I see the idiots in Haggard Garage in that messy ass warehouse working underneath cars all on top of each other. Looks like a horrific accident waiting to happen.
Currently my plan is to use jack stands, wheels, and keep my hydraulic jack in place for back-up. If I don't need to remove the wheels, I'll use the wheel blocks to roll up on. That is the safest I can get.
