learn the game as europeans, try castille, or portugal for comfy colonizing. then move on to the americas or east asia

I suggest playing as France. Even with Historical Nations turned on, they are unrivaled in sheer power in the early game. Be wary of alliances when declaring war, don't take too many provinces in the same area in quick succession, and in general pay attention to what the game's telling you. It doesn't 'play itself', but it does hold your hand quite a lot if you let it.

cons: HRE hates you, england hates you, aragon probably hates you, you have no friends in europe

strategy: eat aragon, castile, and portugal until you've gone full french iberia; you are now strong enough to take on the HRE by yourself, so go do that and try to dismantle it
